Miss Effie Rex of Ossian is here visiti ing with friends. Albert Boner of Pleasant Mills was business visitor in the city today. Mrs. John Fuerst who has been seriously ill for several days shows but little improvement. Mrs. Hugh Miller and children of Muncie are guests of the Barbara Winir s and Mrs. L. C. Miller families. The U. Deininger family have gone to Rome City where they will spend a couple of weeks enjoying a good outing. The annual retreat of the Sisters of St. Agnes is being held this week. A number of visiting Sisters are in attendance. The Misses Ruth and Marguerite Gleiser have returned to Watseka, 111., alter a few weeks with their brother. the Rev. W. H. Gleiser and Mrs. Gleiser. Mrs. W. H. Giserel has gone Gleiser. Mrs. W. H. Gleiaer has gone liver, where she will visit with her aunt. Mrs. Mary Coffin. To further protect themselves again-' damage by fire, The Holthouse Drug Co., has placed an order for several Electrene fire extinguishers with the county agent, Henry Dellinger, litis machine is the latest thing in chemical fire extinguishers and many business houses are installing them. Miss Beryls Lehman, daughter of Mrs. Jacob Buhler, left yesterday for Dertoit, Michigan, to visit with an aunt, Mrs. Lawson and other relatives there and in other Michigan cities for ; iv weeks. Miss Lehman probably arrived in Detroit just about the time that the great storm broke there, al--1 though no word has yet been received from her.

Miss Nora Weber has gone to Fort Wayne where she will be employed. Miss Edith Miller has taken a position as clerk at the Bernstein store. Frank Kleinhenz spent Sunday here with his mother. Mrs. Mary Kleinhenz and children. Fred Fuilenkamp left Sunday morning for an over Sunday visit with friends at Lima. Ohio. Mr. Horn, inspector for the National Hardwood Lumber Association, was here on business yesterday. Philip Ardener arrived Saturday from Toledo, Oiiio, for a visit with his wife and babe for a few days. Clark Sphar left yesterday for Angola where he will take a six weeks' course in the Tri State Normal. The families of Mail Carriers Roy Wolford and W. It. Dorwin, are at Clear Lake for a vacation visit. C. C. Enos made a business trip to Logansport in the interests of the International Harvester Company. Mr. and Mrs. Tony Miller returned to Kalamazoo, Mich., after a visit here with George Appleman family. Mrs. J. Q. Neptune and children left Saturday for Marion, Ohio, to visit with her sister, Mrs. Cari Bishop for a week. Miss Irene Gerard is in charge of the Deininger millinery store during the absence of the family at Rome

Bell returned for a visit with her son, Frank Bell and family at Rushville. She was accompanied to her home by her granddaughter, Miss Betty Bell. Harry Ward returned to this city for a several days stay to attend to business matters. He will return the latter part of the week to Petoskey. Mich., where he and his family are spending the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harding of Ft. Wayne came down by automobile Sun day to get Miss Helen Jean Hunter who returned to Fort Wayne after a two weeks' visit with her uncle and aunt. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Myers. Tom William is the the name given to the week old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Voglewede. The babe was christened Sunday in the St. Mary's church and Mr. William Dowling and Miss Emma Tcrveer acted as sponsors. Mrs. Ben Gerard returned yesterday morning to Auburn after a visit here with the Al Gerard family. She was accompanied by Mrs. Al Gerard as far is Fort Wayne. Ben Gerard who spent Sunday here, returned home Sunday evening. Miss Agnes Costello, cashier and bookkeeper for the Indiana Lighting company left today on a several weeks vacation. She will be accompanied by a lady friend from Fort Wayne and they will visit New York. Niagara Falls, Washington. D. ('.. and a number of other important and interesting cities. Talk about a woman not being able to hold her tqngue. After having been married thirty-one years Carte J. Bailey ot South Bend, filed suit for di vcrce from Alexander Bailey. The couple separated in 1907, but have during all the time since then lived in the same house and never addressed each other.
PROTESTS AGAINGT NOMINATION (United Press Service.) Washington, D. C„ July 14—(Special to Daily Democrat)---Hugh T. Miller of Columbus. Indiana, today telegraphed today half a dozen Republican senators protesting against the nomination of Mark Slorren as United States Marshal of Indiana. He pointed out that no charges had been made against E. H. Schmidt whose term does not expire until next May. —o MARINES IN READINES. (United Press Service.) Washington, D. C., July 14 —(Special to Daily Democrat) —Filled with marines for possible service in Hayti and Santo Domingo, the transport Hancock sailed froyi Vera Cruz for Guantanamo. Official report was made to the navy department today that many foreign refugees were boarding steamers and fleeing from the revolutionary trouble. o MAY CAUSE BREC?H. (United Press Service.) C„ July 14 —(Special to Daily Democrat)—The report of the inter-state commerce commission of the New Haven investigation will widen the breech between the com mission and department of justice, according to all indications today. The department of justice states that there is no law under which the railroad directors can lie prosecuted and that restitution suits will be up to the stockholders. Ed. S. Christen, newly elected county superintendent began his official duties in earnest this morning and re reived many callers all of whom wished him well and assured him of their co-operation in making the schools of Adams county progress. He is acquainting himself with the duties of the office and will give it his entire time. Besides the grading of examina tion manuscripts his biggest job just now will be in arranging for the teachers’ annual institute which will be held the first week of September. The instructors have not been provided for yet. Henry Snyder, a well known farm ?r of Thorncreek township, northwest of the city, lost ten head of hogs by the intense heat Friday, and two of them were large brood sows, the balance being shoats. Two of the shoats were large enough for market hut were being fattened more. They were driven from one pasture field to another about 9:00 o’clock in the morning, and three hours later, all were found dead. Lack of water in the field is given as the cause for their demise, and the loss will amount tc slso.oo.—Columbia City Post.
