| DR. GRENFELL’S LIFE 1 j Career of Heroic Service Full of Many Dangers. 5 J Sails Rock-Strewn Seas Like the Vlk- ; Ing of Old —In Twenty Years He Has Accomplished Much for People of North. 1 > s . New York. —With tho visit to thia i city recently of Dr. Wilfred T. Grenfell > many interestiox facts concerning the • work done by the famous missionary ■j in Xev.foundland and Labrador were i disclosed. * More than twenty years ago Doctor ■> Grenfell left England in a staunch littie mission ship bound for Labrador. i When Doctor Grenfell reached ixibra- ? dor In 1892 he found about 3,000 per- * manent residents, or “liveyeres," as : they are called locally. The summer • fishing fleet from Newfoundland and s the surrounding country brought the t inhabitants to about 25,000 men and : women. ; They had little education and inadei quate food and clothing. Medical and I surgical aid was almost unobtainable, f In the score of years that have passed •; since Doctor Grenfell entered Labrador _ he has developed the social, economic, educational and religieus life of the • isolated people of the Far North and t: has been the moans of bringing medft ical aid and instruction in sanitation. « One of his Ideals was to erect a J building for tho visiting seamen. For tt ten years Doctor Gr. nfell lectured and g set aside such funds as he couid spare a from the rapidly growing demands of * the already established interests, in ♦ order that he could provide some suitJ able home for the "jack” ashore. «t His alm was finally accomplished 8 and there now stands in St. John’s ♦ Newfoundland, the King George V. * Seamen's institute. The building was f! planned as a home and club house. 8 and since its opening has been used ♦ by a large number of seamen. The 4 Institute was opened on December « 19. 1912. •I On Sunday afternoons and nights ft Grenfell hall, dedicated to DoctorGreng fell's mother, is used for church servt; lees. The hall during the week is * used for entertainment purposes. Tho trapboat a bouncing over the wavos shouts or ♦ annuls her a welcome. Along the 4 coast Doctor Grenfell's arrival is 8 heralded by all the inhabitants of the 4 llttlo settlement hastening to the land- § Ing place to greet him.
