FOR-AraitmENTOFSffiiG£ ——— Avol dance oTWo rrywnd^Wwtangttevwof DleMhe-Maln Thirty a, Says Dr. Dsxao. These com merits on how to attain old age are mad® by a writer In the Journal of the American Medical Association: "The chances of attaining old age are much greater if we live much of jur life in fresh country air. Statistics go to show, according to Dr. Dez* so of Budapest, that the fourth generation of the town dweller Is unknown; but enough Is currently reported to make the conclusion inevitable that the sine qua non of longevity is a certain amount of time spent in the country. "The city child is subject to a number of disturbing conditions other than mere absence of creature comforts, which undermine the constitution by throwing too heavy a burden on the sense organs, through which exhaustion of the central nervous system follows; among these conditions are noises, a perpetual round of hurrj, and unending sequences of Incidents exhausting the attention to which are superadded the physical discomforts of vitiated air aflluvla from human beings and waste organic products, besides offensive gases and iufection laden dust. "To attain old age we have to relieve ourselves from worry, strains and | anxieties, withdraw periodically from the whirl of effortful existence, modify our diet, omit the use of stimulants and narcotics, and spend reasonably long periods of time under pleasant conditions in practical retirement Above all, amusement should be sira pliffed and accepted rather than sought after. Only vegetable and semt-anlmal foods should be eaten.” AND MR. SNUCKLES DEPARTED —————— Experience Had Taught Him It Wat Not Wise to Be the Refugee in Family Quarrei. “Twuz dis uh way. An amusing story is being tcld of a clergyman who was being entertained over a week-end by one of the well-to-do but plain men of a Lancashire town not tar from Manchester. As soon as the guest was settled by thu, fireside on the Sunday evening his host asked him: “Are you a teetotaller?" "Well, no: not exactly,’ the clergyman admitted. The master of the house received the statement with obvious relief. "Ahm relght glad to hear It," he said: "we’a had that sort stayin' with us afore. Now, if ye'd been one o' them teetotallers, ye'd a' been wantin' soda water and lemonade and lime Juice and ginger ale, and nobody knows what all. But as ye ain't a teetotaller, ye’ll be like the rest o' us. an' satisfied wl' plain water!" Investigating Lightning Bug. Two investigators and writers in the Lightning Journal hare given the -result of their efforts to measure the candle power of the lightning bug. The glow worm, which is the larvae of the firefly, was found to give off an Illumination equal to .0048 candle pow- , er to the square centimeter. The flash of the firefly Is probably many fold, perhaps 50 or 100-fold, as bright as the steady glow of the larva. It appears, then, that the luminous material of the glow worm, could It be reproduced, would not only be of high luminous efficiency, but would also be a happy means in intrinsic brightness, far lower than the artificial light sources with which we now try our eyes, yet high enough to permit Its use without pre-empting more wall apace than we now give to windows.
