Heller, Sutton A- Holler, Attorneys. 19-26-5-12 o Implicated In Murder (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) of tliis county. The two are not related, it is said, but hud been working together in a stone quarry near Cellna, Ohio, about tlie time of tlie murder. Young Dennis Baker it is said is the lover of a daughter of George Baker, and thus oecame quite friendly also with the brother, whose confession last evening implicated Dennis. The first clue unearthed by Detective Gerdcman, pointing to tlie guilt of l.aVan Baser was when a party living on the first floor of the building in which George Baker at Celina, 0., reside, liearu a conversation between the family in which tlie mother accused LaVan of committing tlie deed. A contractor living near Celina, at whose home Baker took dinner on Sunday following tlie crime, had also old of his being flush with money tiiat day, and since he had been in jail for some time up to within a few days prior to the crime, mystery surrounded tlie means through which lie had secured any money. These facts and the description of the assailants as given by Green, the survivor, strengtliend the suspicion. But the crowning charge came when George Baker and ills son became enemies, and the son threatened to have tlie father arrested for failure o provide for his wife. The father turned against tlie son and unburden'd himself to a friend, who in turn told the officials. The elder Baker told of the murder, which he said ills ! on hail confessed to him. George Baker accused his son and showed the knife belonging to Green, which ii» son gave to him. Green's watch and a pair at gloves, according to LaVan's confession to his fattier, were ■brown from the (rain. The knife and money were retained. Tlie knife piovea the strongest link. LaVan va. Dennis. laiYan Baker, it is said, last night confessed to officials at tlie Portland jail, where he was taken from Celina. He claims that he was with Dennis Baker of this county, and that Dennis struck the blow with an iron rod, that killed Phillips, while he (LaVan) stood by and saw the stroke. According to Prosecuting Attorney Myers of Celina, Ohio, who was interviewed this afternoon at the jail bytwo Democrat reporters, he has evi (cure that points conclusively to the fact that I.aVan was the one who struck the death blow, and not Dennis, but that Dennis was along at the time. Ht also alleges tiiat LaVan got the money. Tlie story he said is a thrill ing one and one that has unfolded rap idly in the past few hours, hut rt fu>ed to give any of the details, re serving them for evidence. The father, George Baker. Is being held at tho Poraland jail, also, and will be u valued witness. Neither knew tiiat the other was in jail and they are kept separate that they may not “arrange" their stories. It Is said tiiat I.a Van Baker lias twice before been accused of murder charges, but each time has escaped prosecution and conviction through ills relatives, who had first gotten him in bad, changing their stories. Dennis Baker of this county has served time at Jeffersonville reformatory on a petit larceny charge. His step father and mother were not Informed of the murder complicity charge tills afternoon and were iguor ant of the details leading up to the arrest. The mother Inquired of ofll clals whether “there was a woman in Ihe case," and was informed tiiat there was not. Rite mentioned a Cora Huk- < i of Ohio, that set uied to particularly favor her boy, hut that Ills family did not consider her the “kind of girl he should marry." TO THE PUBLIC I have opened an office for the practice of law. In the Odd Fellow's Block, in the aulta of rooms formerly occupied by Mr. Beatty, where I may be found during business hours.
