' play that plank for a favorite. It looks like a mix-up very similar to that of two years ago. I Some people are never satisfied. When Wilson had been chosen presi j dent, and the awful rumor spread that he fancied llryan for secretary of ' state, a howl of protest went up fro-n ' j the usual anti-Bryan quarters. What? 1 i’ut that man at the head of the state I | !department? Incredible; it could not !be true! But, alas, it was. The chair of secretary of state, vacated by 1 Knox, was dusted off and presented tc • Bryan, and dismay were the prophec j ies. The eountry had a through tick j et to perdition, sure, with no retun j coupon so long as Bryan was on thI job. Recently the secretary announc ed that he was about to spend seveia weeks lecturing upon the chautauqtu , circuit, and that naturally, for excel I lent physical reasons, he would b* ! away front Washington and the stat< ! department. Were there sighs of re lief from his critics? Not at all. Tin | same persons who howled most dis mally when Mr. Bryan took the sec retariai chair let out a scream of pall : on hearing of his proposal to leave It The folks who didn't want him it i Washington in any official capacity | could not hear to have him off the job ' even for a few weeks.
