EARTHQUAKES EXPERIENCED. (United Press Service) New York, N. ¥.. Feb. 19—(Special to Daily Democrat) — Earthquake shocks which lasted one minute and | thirty seconds were felt in all the cities from Washington. D. C., north to Montreal. Canada. The reports indicate that clocks in various cities stopped at 1:30 this afternoon. The damage was not severe, but houses were rocked and in a few cases windows were broken. PRAYER SERVICE NOTICE. Ulrey, assistant state fire i marshal, of Indianapolis, was here today and with aWI Wemhoff. local fire : chief, and Chief of Police Melchi. held i an examination of the recent fire in j the Haugk block on Madison street. The examination was held at the mayi or's office in the city building was - complete, a number of witnesses being examined and Mr. Ulrey proved his ability. The verdict exonerated any one to whom any blame could be i attached, it -jeing found that there was no insurance and that the fire was very likely caused by the careless
throwing down of a cigarette stub in the building occupied by the Johnson restaurant, Mr. Ulrey left this after noon and will report as above to the state department. He is the man who investigated and caused the arrest of [ four men at Anderson a few days ago i on a charge of arson. o JUDGE LA FOLLETTE IS MADE CHAIRMAN Muncie, Ind., Feb. 10—(Special to Daily Democrat)—The republicans of the Eighth district held an enthusias tic meeting here today, good sized del egations from each county being in attendance. The meeting was called to order at 1 o’clock this atternoon by Acting Chairman Albert Vestal of Anderson. Former Judge John F. La Follett'?' of Portland was elected dis trict chairman by acclamation, there being no other names presented. Wai ter Bali acted as peruianant chairman of the meeting and speeches were made by Former Congressman Cheney and Hon. William Taylor. o WOMEN IN BUSINESS. RESOLUTIONS IN MEMORIAM. The Knights of Pythias lodge of Berne has passed the following resolutions on the death of Peter J.
