A SENATORSHIP » May be Decided at the State Democratic Convention Instead of by Vote. N Z S 1 ' MR. SHIVELY’S PLACE k No Provision Yet Been Made ’ for Election of United i States Senators. » I I Indianapolis, Ind., Dec. 23- (Special to Dully Democrat) With no elec tion machinery provided to nominate ■ and choose a United Stat*- senator by . popular vote, political opinion today seems to be crystalled in favor of having tile party conventions which will nominate state tickets for I*l4 : also nominate the candidates to con test for the place held by Benjamin F. Shively. His term will expire Marell 3. I*ls. His successor is to be chosen November 3, I*l4. The latter date is two months in advance of the opening of the regular biennial session of the state legislature. There is nothing in the Indiana election laws, according to Attorney General Honan, to preclude any one from filing for his candidacy for United Staten aenator. This would relieve the state conventions from calling for nominees if the conventions cared to keep out of the senatorial muddle. But if the selection of a senatorial candidate Is added to the state conventions' duties tile conventions will be enlivened considerably. The con test for the senatorial nomination tin doubtedly will react on the struggle for nominations for state offices. It also means that the precinct, ward and county conventions will lie fighting grounds. NO SHORTEST DAY Says Weatherman — Four Days from Dec. 19 to 23 Are Same Length. LAST OF THE WEEK Some Interesting Figures as the Result of First Six Months of Law. Here Is something for automobile owners to worry aoout. The Induing of license for I*l4. at rates ranging 1 from *3 to *25, will l>e begun by the j secretary of state the day after Christ | l mas. Just after moat people have spent their spare change for Christmas gifts the man with the automobile sill have to dig deep into his jeans, and pay for a new license number plate a blue and white one- to replace the not particularly sightly ye| low and black one. The new automobile law provides tliat machines shall be reglsten-d once each year. The first registration.! however, was only for six months, be cause the law did not bwome effective until the middle of the year. With registration for a year the expense will be just twice as great as It was the first time. The sending out of the new number plates will not be begun until December 26. because until that time the lM>st office will be swamped with Christmas packages. Marlon county machine owners will be expected to call at the secretary of state's office, hut number platee will be sent by mail to applicants In other parts of the state. Application blanks already are In the hands of many of the state j luuiks. automobile dealers and newspapers of the state so that they will ’>e accessible to automobillsta. Twenty thousand of the blue and white plates ordered already are stored away In the liasrnient of the state house, and there will be no delay in their Issuance, such a* was experienced when the law went into effact.
