ADAIR ON CURRENCY Congressman Adair made a brilliant speech ill congress on tiic Glass currency bill. In part he said: ‘•While my business has been that of banking and manufacturing. 1 aiu not here as the representative of the banking interests of tbe country, but as the representative of 250,00 Pof i*s progressive, intelligent and patriotic a people as can be found anywhere on earth. I am representing a large agricultural and manufacturing district where the success of the banks dept nds entirely on the success oi the farmer and the manufacturer. Any legislation, therefore, that would prove hurtful to their interests of the business interests of the country i.i general, would also be disastrous to those engaged in the banking business. 1 am opi*osed< to special privilege in every form and to any bill designed or intended to give to ,th j
hanks, either tmtiomil. state or private. any special privilege that will benefit them at the expense of tl'*‘ people. "Tiie necessity for currency legislation is denied by no one. For ma iy years the people have been demanding relief, but the party in power failed, neglected and refused to legislate lor the gi neral welfare. The death of Mayor Gaynor r. | iiiuvca a man who has bum pr.mi l nent ill New York City politics for uj quarter eantury .and whose name h.iin recent years been frequently mentioned in connection with national places, lie has opposed Tammany with more results than any man in history and he won the respect and admiration of thousands. His death will cause a complication in the muiid pal campaign in the metropolis that only time can work out. We do not believe that there h - been a tariff, certainly not since the v ar, made under such favorable and clean conditions as this one The lobby was driven out of Washington by tlie president, and congress has been iree to serve tile people without being deviled by the representatives ol special interests. No one claims that the bill is perfect. But the standard of comparison is. not perfection, but republican tariffs. We have certainly improved on them, and come measurably near meeting the wishes lof the iw-ople. The bill is a good bill. I The president and congress have done their work well—lndianapolis Newt.
