V. G. McGouagle made a business trip to Berne this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Blosser left tills morning for Hicksville, o , where they will attend the funeral of a relative. Rev. L. C. Hessei't left today for Winona Lake, where he will spend ten days attending the Bible conference. Will and Ruth Hainiuell went to Portland this afternoon, where they will be the guest of their sister, Mrs. C. B. Smith. Miss Marie Allison of Indianapolis will arrive in the city the lager part of the week to be the guest of Miss Frances Dugan. Miss Mary Erwin has returned homo from Valparaiso where she has just completed a twelve weeks' course in the university, preparing herself for a teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Westerfield who have been visiting in the city with G. W. Teeple and family have left for their hanic at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mr. ami Mrs. L V- Grossman and children left for Kendallville to visit with her mother. Mrs. .1. H. Uhl. and to Rome City to visit with the IL i M Grossman family. Miss Florence Cowan was assisting today during a busy rush at. the Erwin ' law office in the absence of the regu- i lar stenographer, Miss Esther Cor-' bett, who is taking her vacation. Mrs. A. D. Ind., Aug. 21 —(Rumors of the renewed activity in coal mining in this vicinity have caused a favoraid,' stir. The Vandalia Coal Company is reported to be figuring on ' acquiring mines and much coal ter- ! ritory. The Sunflower Coal company said to have given the Vandalia 1 an option on one mine and also on all ;ci the coal territory it owns- The Sm.l ower company owns the best mine and the richest coal land in this I part of Indiana. A d- sire to centralize its interests | is l lieved to be the reason for the ’ Vandalia's activity. It already owns traits in snot: around here. Vandalia switches are convenient' to the new developments. With only a I short exteition the Vandalia company can run its switch to the Sun- ; Hower mine, and by branching out i the entire field can be tapped. The .Vpnon Coal Company will sink ! a new mite' this Fall. For a long time there have been rumors that the Monon company contemplated extenj sive operations in the filed southwest i of here.
