Entered at the postolfice in Decatur, The independent movement over the state continues to attract some attention and it’s a queer thing that it does. They object to the old irolitiesl organizations, but they ate simply organizing another, which will conduct affairs by the same rule and after one ■ or two campaigns would be just as much a political party as any other, appointing the men to office who as sist them, in fact it is quite likely that would be the result this year, so what’s all the fuss about any way, t liter than the fellow who is out and knows it, is trying to get in? 1 Verily, the physicians are coming out strong in some of their diliverances on the subject of cheerfulness and its effect on health. What would the average physician have said a few years ago if it had been suggested that good humor is a preventative ot appendicitis? Yet this is exactly what we now hear from a prominent speaker at a medical convention. Gloomy spirits cause the bolting of food and indigestion. These things cause appendicitis, and appendicitis means an operation and heavy doctors’ bills. The oiieration is now safe, the mortality having been reduced to less than 1 i>er cent, perhaps, but no one will claim that it is actually pleasant, and certainly hills are net pleasant If smiling and the inward optimism that goes with it will prevent appendicitis along with many other troubles, physicial and mental, the pessimists may as well put the shutters up and admit final defeat. All society will become a Society for the Promotion of Smiling. Perhaps smiling men and women will learn courtesy and mend their street car manners and their crowd manners. Nothing is more maddening than vacant, folish, idiotic optimism, but to an optimism backed by medical science, by reason, by solid evidence in the. shape of a retained appendix and beautifully shortened doctors’ bills, all haili—Chicago Record Herald. There is a man in town who has done things. A very modest man ii: Mr. Elwood Haynes, and talks of other subjects than himself when he has his own way. Yet the inventive genii’s otthis man has wrought profound and far-reaching soc ial and economic changes in the whole civilized world For he built the first automobile It seems almost incredible that it is no more than twenty years ago when MrHaynes appeared in the first car ever seen on the streets of New York —and wks promptly arrested for "scarin': the horses.” We move fast nowadays. It s hard for some of us older ones to keep up. The horses are not. the only things which the noise an! march of invention have scared—old political maxims, old economic doctrines, old religions superstitions, old precedents of all kinds, hoary with centuries of reverence—all have, been scared.
