- ■■■ —- — . New Mystic Delineations For Chautauqua Week JL A “* * - A ■ ■«£ ZZ , LAURANT. IX TRANT, the magician, who appears here Chautauqua week, tells the following interesting story of the origin of his mystic hut isipersona- / tions. one of the new features of his program, lie says: "A number of years ago I had the pleasure of meeting a very interesting traveler in the person of Monsieur F. Trewey of Paris. He was making a tour of the United States, and, being a magician, we became friends at once. It was through him I first heard of the possibilities of using the rim of a hat for impersonating different characters. Trewey was a wonderful actor and had perfected this art to a marvelous degree, and at that time I never expected I would Im> able to accomplish it The origin of this form of entertainment is quite interesting. I am sure many people will be surprised to learn it was first used by a very clever crook to outwit the police of Paris. He operated on the streets of Paris after opera at night as the people were departing for their homes. He would mingle with the throng, wearing the opera cloak, which at that time was a regular mode of dress, and, with the rim of a hat folded Into a clever shape, he would follow his profession of picking pockets. If in danger of being caught he would slip away, refold the hat and reappear without any one recognizing him, as the disguise is perfect when cleverly executed. Ke outwitted the police for several years until at last he was captured in Paris, and upon his person was found the old felt hat rim above referred to. No one gave It further thought until Mr. Trewey accidentally hit upon tho idea as a form of entertainment The secret of the entire effect consists in being able to fold and refold rapidly a felt rim into many different hats. The facial expression and the necessary ability to act nnd carry out the character impersonated is, of course, the most important part of all.” Notice To Gas Consumers The Public Utility Bill pasted at the last session of our Legislature require the payment of all gas bills between the Ist.
