It is a great office and always ought to be filled by a great man. That is due the people. Without being invidious in comparison, it is within the limit of truth and fact to say that the present secretary, Hon. Lew G. Ellingham, is the real ideal of all of them. His administration justifies the statement. The state's business transacted through this office is efficiently, faithfully, ably and honestly performed. It is transacted with dispatch - and no neglect. The work is right up to date, and the public is not delayed. Yesterday the governor’s proclama-: tion declaring in force the laws of the I last legislature was issued. The sec- ' retary of state prepares the copy for these laws, reads proof, makes the distribution, and receives the receipts , from the county clerks, and in fact is I the publisher. The present volumn contains 1,132 pages. It required im-1 mense work and faithful, patient attention to all details to produce this book in so brief a time. The legislature adjourned March 10' and April 30 the acts were all laws. That record is not only fine but is a ! record-breaker among the secretarys of state. Mr. Ellingham is a broad-gauged man—and knows full well the needs of the state. He is genial, a Channing personality and deservedly popular. Everybody is his friend and he is a high honor to his party and state. By his associates in the state house he is greatly esteemed for his gentlemanly bearing, his absolutely honorable and square dealings, for his trueness and fidelity to his friends; for his loyalty and strict party regularity, and for his amiableness to the public. Then again, the Eighth district, which is his home, is very proud of him; of his record; and of is success. It rejoices in the honor be brings to the district. No secretary has been greater than Mr. Eilingham, and the Bulletin is very happy over his splendid record. —Anderson Bulletin. FOUND —Check book, with the name of Green on it. While house cleaning and the “dry” campaign kept many away from the meeting of the Woman's Home Missionary society at the home of Mrs. Ferd Nichols ’yesterday, the twenty ladies who attended had an unusually splendid study andfcocial time. Mrs. J. D. Hale was the leader of the study which was on “Mormonism in Life.” Very good papers on the subject were read by Mrs. Dan Sprang and Mrs. J. C. Tritch and the discussion was interesting. In the musical program, a piano duet by the Misses Mabel Hower and Ireta Butler, a piano solo by Ireta Butler, and a beautiful lullaby by little Monai Butler, were charming. As Mrs. Hale will leave the city for the summer, June 1, and this was her last meeting with the society until the autumn, she gave a talk at the close, full of deep feeling and read an appropriate poem. Mrs. Nichols was assisted by Mrs. George Roop in serving refreshments of ice cream and cake, after the business period. May-dav was characterized by a delightful social for the Thimble club with Mrs. Earl B. Adams, hostess, Thursday afternoon. The party was confined to the club’s own little coterie of members and sewing and conversation and refreshments rounded out the hours in a pleasing way.
Mrs, Minnie Daniels and family had as thefr guests at dinner today. Miss Edith Laughlin, of Monroeville, and Mr. and Mrs. William Cross. After a several weekt' cessation, the ■Question club resumed its activities and had a delightful time last evening with Miss Leah Apt at the home of Mrs. Mary Eley. The Misses Lena Sutton and Flora Fledderjohann were guests besides the club members. After sewitg, a chafing dish supper was served. - ■ ■ » „ „ HIRAM STUDENT TO PREACH. | Elder G. T. Marshal Charles Pierce has issued a warning to the people of the city against a smooth talking young stranger, who leads many to believe their flock of chickens are badly diseased and the only way of effecting a cure is to purchase some chicken powder from him. The stranger tells the people that he came here on a special trip to treat chickens belonging to Dwight Williamson, \nd since coming here has learned that there Is a contagious disease going the rounds and he is making an effort to stop it. Mr. Williamson never saw the young man and his chickens are in the bgst of health.
