Hoffman were visitors in Berne yesterday. Mrs. H. 8. Michaud and daughter, Florine, and Mrs. W. H. Lee spent the ' day in Fort Wayne. Mrs. Veronica Smith left today for Huntington, where she will visit with her brother and others over Sunday, ) Miss Leota Bailey has finished a' most successful term as teacher at a school south of Berne and has come home for her vacatlono. Miss Ruby Sheets left this afternoon for Colorado Springs, where she ■will make her home. She has spent several years there and came home to visit this winter with her mother, Mrs. Nancy Sheets, and family.

He has improved nicely and weighs about eight pounds more than when he went there. Clyde Rice made a business trip to Fort Wayne this noon. Mrs. James Stockard of Williams was shopping here today. A fine .new Gary safe has been installed in the S. E. Hite grocery. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Archer of near Pleasant Mills were shoppers here today. Commissioner Jim A. Hendricks of Monroe was hAre today attending to business affairs. Ben Schroyer has returned to his 1 home in Bellefontaine after a visit here with friends. Miss Jean Butler left this afternoon 1 for Huntington, where she will visit over Sunday with friends. Deputy Sheriff Kelly and T. R. Noll accompanied Fred Zurcher to the insane asylum at Richmond this afternoon. The schools will resume Monday after a vacation of one week and the last six weeks of the school year will soon roll around. Oscar Colchin was assisting today at the Niblick grocery store in the ab- i sence of Forest Helm, who has the ■ mumps. Mr. Helm will return to work AJpnday. City Mail Carrier O. P. Mills was off I duty today, attending to some business at the farm. His place was taken by Milt Leavell, substitute carrier. The Concord Lutheran Ladies' Aid society are planning to entertain their ' husbands in the near future at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John .Christen 1 in this city. i B, F. Kizer, who has been teaching school in Union township, has closed his term and has moved his family to this city. They are located in the L- E. Opliger home on Third street. fare. Harriet Coverdale and daughter, Mrs. George Dutcher, returned to- , daji from Fort Wayne. They attended the funeral of Mrs. Coverdale's sister, Miss Emma Philley, held yesterday. The public sale of all household furniture of Howard Burdg is being conducted this afternoon and is calling many bidders who are taking advantage of some of the fine articles offered for sale. Miss Ruth Baltzell has returned to the county auditor’s office after an attack of the mumps, since last Friday. Miss Theresa Baltzell was off duty only a day, her siege of the mumps being a very light one. “Deadwood Dick." king of the Black Hills,” greatest western drama ever put on the screen, will be shown at the Star theater next Monday night. It is a three-reel production and the prices will be five and ten cents. Don't overlook this one. The session of the commissioners which opens Monday, promises to be a very Interesting one. Aside from the local option fight, there are some other important matters, including six macadam road contracts. Mr. and Mrs. Rolla Calderwood of Blue Creek township were in town today. They have just received word that their four daughters, who live in Dayton, escaped the recent flood with their lives, but had very narrow escapes and harrowing experiences. A story about them will be given soon. The appointments of the ministers to their charges will be read either Sunday and Monday at both the Methodist conference at Tipton and the Evangelical conference at Indianapolis. There is much interest as to the appointments for the local ' churches. The saloons are operating today under a law passed by the recent legis - lature which allows them to operate even after their licenses expire, and [until the commissioners meet in regular session to consider applications for renewals. The board will meet Monday and if they find the remon [ etrance sufficient, the saloons must close immediately. # The boys south of town are having i a great deal of pleasure in telling about Thomas Dowling and John Meyer, two of the best known farmers of this locality, who are said to have made much preparation to escape the floods when the report reached them that the Grand reservoir had broken last week. It is told that’ Tom put his stock up in the hay mow and prepared a craft unique, if nothing else, in which John joined. They entered a big water tank and placed therein an engine taken from an automobile, providing the same with provisions that would have come handy.
