Sheriff Wilson was called to Decatur Ind., Sunday evening and again Monday morning in connection with a horse stealing case. The particulars of the case are a little misty and the motive unfathomable, but according to all stories it appears that William Cook of Decatur. Ind . came to Hie city Sunday afternoon, accompanied by a lad of twelve, named Johnnie Corbett, to make some sort of a settlement with P. C. Masterson, who was training a horse for Cook, and who had also purchased another for him. Masterson was not at home, but some time later missed bis horse, and noticed Sheriff Wilson, who immediately set out for Decatur In an ai tomobile, following up the various clews. He overhauled the horse and the rider on the state line; the rider proved to be young Corbett, who told a. story of how he had been instructed by Cook, as to where the horse was kept, how to get out of the fair ground, the road to Decatur, etc., and that as soon as he secured the horse, he was to beat it for the state line as fast as he could, but after getting into Indiana, he need not hasten so fast. Mr Wilson reported the matter to the Indiana sheriff, and returned to this city. Early Monday morning he was informed over the telephone that the Decatur officers had arrested his man and returned to that city to get him. arriving in this city at about 4 o'clock with his prisoner Cook was arraign ed before Squire Manship, where he told conflicting stories, first claiming that he bald sold the horse to Masterson, who was to work out the amount, |SO, in training the ether horse, but that he had failed to do so. and that consequently the animal belonged to him, and that he had a right to lake it. loiter he claimed that he did not know that the boy was going to take the horse, and consequently he w is not guilty. The 'squire held that the evidence justified his retention on sus piclon. and committed him to the county jail to await a hearing In the sum of 1500 and set his hearing lor Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock ;n the meantime he will board with the sheriff if unable to furnish the bail set. —Van Wert Tinies. — .... — ■ — - - FELL UNDER THE HAY.
