THE ERIE BRIDGE t The Excavations for Foundations are Being Made at This Time. WILL BE WIDER _______ 1 Grade Work is Being Rapidly Finished and Bridge Will be Built. The eork of construction of the '.oundationa for the Erie railroad I ridge which will accommodate the [ double track which the company is nropoaing. has been begun. A force of men are engaged in digging to bed reek in a very similar t.>anner to t.uit pursued at the Monroe meet bridge <■• i-gVLtions. The biidge proper will be of steele and will be i she same length as the one now in place Ihe width will be increased about fifteen feet over that of now. The construction of the steel work will not begin before next spring, and ibe grade work will no doubt be brought up to the foundations in order to give them the proper backing to stand the strain East nf town the grading is being > shed along and the two steam shovrU at work are cutting through the state line hiil, the grade of which will Le lowered. At the Piqua road crosspg the grade will be slightly higher ’han at present and just east of there a lowering will be made. The intent on is to get as near a level grade ac possible and many mistakes of the original engineers are being corrected .-.s the work progresses. West of town the grade is complet--d as fpr as the water tank, and that work through town will not be done until a few w’eeks before the laying of the steel. ACCURATE COUNT And Weight of all Mail Handled in Two Months Must be Kept by THE RURAL CARRIERS New Order—Will Evidently Earn the New Increase in Salary. r.videntlv the rural mail carriers will b»> given a better chance to earn their hundred dollar increase of salary, which becomes effective September 30th, making their salaries $l,lOO a year. Postmaster W. A. Lower has just received word from headquarters ; of additional work for two months j '• which will be required of the carriers. Prom October 1 to November 30th, they will be required to count and weigh all mail delivered or collected ; by them on their route, and to make ‘ report of same to headquarters. In doing this they will also be required tn separate the mail into classes and keep an account of pieces and weight. While the order gave no explanations or where fores, the purpose is probably to get data to aid in the new parcel post system which will go into effect January Ist. An idea of the volume handled by <-ach carrier will thus be gotten, and th« government will be enabled to nake some estimate of tbo equipment qulred ijt taking care of the greater Increase wliich the parcels post system will no doubt create. Each Decatur carrier has from 80 to 110 mail boxes on his route KILLED POLITICAN Terre Haute, Ind., Sept. 26 —(Spec--1 ial to Daily Democrat.) —Terry Kiger 1 a ward politician died early todoy after having been shot by Frank Savage a 1 political rival. SOME TIME AGO And Failed to Return it— Marshal Forced to Cut Chain to Free it. A suit to replevy a motorcvcle was filed in ’Squire Stone's court Wednesday afternoon against Dallas Butler, whom Ervin Butler alleges obtained possession of his motorcycle. It is said that Ervin had gone to the sugar factory in the north part of the city and had set up his machine along the road and that Dallas Butler, coming along, recognized the machine, and taking it, ran into town, and retained possession of it. Efforts to secure the machine were unsuccessful and Ervin entered the suit and a warrant was issued to Mar shal Peterson late Wednesday after- ' noon for its recapture. He found the machine in front of the Graham & Walters real estate office, locked with a chain and a padlock. He had to visit a nearby blacksmith shop to secure tools with which to free the machine and return it to the owner. The machine was turned over to Ervin and the hearing in the case will be bad some time this afternoon. Ervin Butler is the son cf Trustee Sam Butler. BAND MEETING.
