MUST CLEANUP I The Mayor Issues Proclamation Calling on Citizens to Clean Premises. — ■ »HEALTH BOARD BUSY I Eighteen Were Notified This Morning—Will Cover Rest of City Soon. Decatur, Ind., June 14, 1912. ! Notice to the Public; • 1 To all persons who have not their - ' premises in a good, sanitary condition '■ they are hereby notified to at once clean up and place them In good condition. A member of the state, county and ! city boards of health called on me to- ; day and notified me that they are ■ making an inspection of the city and 1 find many places in an unsanitary condition. Please give this matter your immediate attention and save cost and trouble. (Signed) JUDSON W. TEEPL.E Mayor. The above proclamation of the mayor follows an investigation began this morning by Dr. Boyers on the part of the state board of health, Dr. Miller on part of the county board of health, and Dr. Keller, on the part of the city. In the morning they covered the east side of Second street and found many places in a bad condition. Eighteen were notified to clean up and the mayor was notified. It becomes his duty to enforce the statutes and ordinances now that they have been notified and two or three days will be allowed them in which to have the work done. The investigation of other parts of the city will be made immediately and all premises found in a dirty or unsanitary condition will have to be cleaned up as they menace health. Practically all of the citizens are in favor of the move and many notified this morning are working to clean up their places. ■ o , Harvey Segur left this morning for Angola where he will spend Sunday with his daughters and sister, Miss Sarah Segur.

CLEANING-UP DAY. Decatur will have a cleaning-up day and that within the next forty-eight hours if the orders of the health commission which made an inspection tour of the back doors and alleys of the various business houses of the city, this morning are obeyed. • The commission comprised Dr. J. S. Buyers of the state board of health. Dr. J. M. Miller of the county board of health and Dr. H. E. Keller of the city board of health. A visit to the alleys and an inspection of the backdoor premises found in many cases a deplorable state of affairs. Banana peels and slops of many kinds were sitting in uncovered cans or barrels, and other conditions were bad. The law requires slops to be kept in a galvanized, tlight-covered can, thus preventing the escape of the offensi'. e odor and the drawing of the germcarrying Hies. In many cases orders to clean up in twenty-four hours were given and in others, forty-eight hours. The report was given to the mayor, w r ho will issue an order for the rectifying of the matter. o j LOSE $125,000. (United Press Service) Indianapolis, Ind., June 14 —(Special to Daily Democrat) —The state board of charities today lost $125,000 when a local supreme court jury decided that Andrew Hogston, a wealthly land owner of Grant county, was of unsound mint- when he made his will in 1909. Attorneys for the defense stated that the case would be appealed to the higher court. TJie verdict of the jury gave a portion to James Hogston, a half brother. Thirty-six ballots we-e taken by the jury before arriving a a verdict. The jury was out forty-eight hours. The plaintiff’s attorney fees, it is said, will amount to $60,000. — o DEATH OF GRANDSON. Mrs. Mary Kortenbrer this morning received a message from her son, Bernard, of Edwardsville, 111., telling of the death of their son, Herman, aged five years, whose death occurred shortly after 5 o’clock this morning. Typhoid fever was the cause of his death and he had been sick for several weeks past. Word was received a few days ago, telling of his critical condition and the end was expected. He is survived besides his parents, by two sisters, Angeline and Marcella. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Kortenbrer will no doubt attend.
