y«==3F POULTRY I __ , J I hl—-RF AUTOMATIC HEN TRAP NEST Enables Owner to Tell Which Chicken Has Laid Egg—Made Vermin Proof and Safe From Rats. Who says poultry raising Is not a science? A Pennsylvania man has just come forward with an automatic trap nest, by means of which the farmer can tell which hen laid which egg. As the hen enters the nest her weight on the floor causes the door to close. When she lays an egg it' rolls down upon another spring-oper-ated mechanism and opens the exit, door. The runway into which this exit leads has a series of small stalls. I r cp Trap Nest for Hens. As she passes through each the door closes behind her, and she cannot gc back. The next hen goes through the same performance, and her egg rolls Into position just back of that laid by No. 1. It is easy, therefore, to match chickens with eggs and find what kind of food gives the best results. The trap nest Is made vermin proof c:. .1 the eggs in it are safe from the vorac ity of rats or other animals, or even the chickens themselves. | IOWA WINTER FEED METHOD With Range of Rye, Daily Feed of Cabbage and Warm Mash Hens Should Be In Fine Condition, An a j jultryman advises this n. hi 2 a keeping cabbage as a winter feed for fowls: As soon as severe j .reezlng threatens, the cabbage should ; be pulled up and stored away. We adopt the simple method of burying I them in the ground, usually right where the*, stood. The finest beads j ar a reset ed for the table and put to ■ them ’res and all tho remainder ol I every ?ree burled down for the poul | tr”. i i' ering them is quickly done I by ' crowing out a trench with the i plow that will admit three heads side i by side; then another layer of two j heads wide is placed on top of those ; I with roots turned up in every case j i Some straw or grass is then thrown i I over them and on top of this is a thin layer of earth, of a slope to shed ofi I the rain. Later on a heavier covering i of earth may be added. Cabbage thus ’ i treated will continue to grow more ; tender, crisp and sweet and far ex I cels in flavor the dry stored kind, i I With a range of green rye, a daily ' feed of cabbage and a warm mash In I cold weather mixed with cooked tur- | nips, beets or potatoes, the hens , should be in prime condition to make i a high egg record.
