GIRLS BE (PLAIN Is Hetty Green’s Advice Given Out on Her Seventyseventh Birthday. NO HOBBLE SKIRTS Says She Never Wore One in Her Life and Don’t Ever Expect to do so. New York, N. Y., Nov. 29 —Hetty Green or. her seventy-ninth birthday anniversary Monday, declared that she was growing younger every day. She in” a nickle for car fare to visit her son Colonel Green, who was i in her Broadway office, slaving away ; at the task of looking after her mil- | lions. But Mrs. Green was not satisfied with two things—the horse show and the financial condition. She entered her office, wearing a rusty old cape, a dowdy black skirt and her throat was muffled. Her eyes were bright and her words w’ere sharp and short. “Have you been to the horse show?" she was asked. “Bah! That isn't any horse show,” she replied tartly. “It is a costumer’s exhibit. They are not real horses that prance around the ring. They are there to look pretty, like the women in the boxes. What do those women know about horses? They have to go west if they want to see some real good horses.” Os financial conditions in New York she wagged her head. “I am not at all satisfied with conditions,” she said. “They are not to my suiting at all.” “Have you anything to suggest as a remedy,” she was asked. “Nothing.” she answered. Advice to Giddy Ones.” “I am seventy-seven years old today, and 1 feel just as young as I ever did,” said Mrs. Green. “I can tell those giddy young girls of today how to reach seventy-seven and be young and healthy. You must be good to other people—also good to yourself. One reason that I have reached seventyseven is that I have always been good to myself. “I never wore a Tiobble skirt, and I never wore a harem skirt, and I am determined that I shall never wear one. “Another thing that has kept me young is that I have always tried to help people. During all the terrible panics I got younger instead of older. Do you want to know why? Well, it was because when I could have made millions by squeezing on street loans, 1 did not make them. I gave people who owed me all the time I could. I never kicked a man when he was j down. I always tried to lift him up. “Tell these young women today, too, , not to allow themselves to be tempted. . There have been those who tried to tempt me to go with them and wreck others, but I never did that and never j shall. “Just tell the young girls also that i they might wear plain clothes as I do. 1 see them in the street cars with , their pretty bonnets and pretty curls. They arc false. Thej r should like the plain people I love them. Every day I take a car and come down town. “Often I have to stand, but I don't 1 mind. Then. I am in touch with the ! plain people I love, and can see these ' girls with the false curls. Just tell them that if they want to be seventyseven, as I am, they must do better, and not be tempted by any such . things." Q TROUBLE FOR A SALESMAN. looms up if his health runs down. That’s why E.
