Tom Dirken was at Portland this morning looking after some business affairs which required his attention for a short while. I A large number witnessed the play, I “Quincy Adams Sawyer,” at the opera house Wednesday evening and were well pleased with the performance rendered. Mrs. Hunter Myers was at Berne today attending the annual county Sunday school convention, which convened there last evening to continue until over this evening. Mrs. Effie Brokaw' Johnson of Decatur, who had been visiting with Mrs. S. F. Bowser for some days, and the Misses Sadie Cook, Inna Waters, Verne Pfeiffer. Della Jamey, Della and Blanche Kern, Huth. Grace and Stella Waters, left yesterday for Garrett for The Peoria (Ill.) Journal put out a big "Crop Improvement Edition” Monday, which gives plenty of good things on matter in that line. A copy of the extra reached this office, showing that our friend, Colonel Dick 'lMwnsend, has been reading about Decatur’s sugar beet movement, and remembered , us. Sheriff Durkin made a business trip to Geneva this morning, having in his company, Bert Webb, who several days ago engaged in a fight, and in which ho beat George Zaggle over the head with a stove-lid. His trial was sot for this morning, when the charge I as to his part in the affair will be made known. Peter Forbing was a Fort Wayne business visitor today. Miss Clara Bultemeier spent the day at tne home ot a cousin near St. i John's. ■ Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Bauman and sons, Albert and Walter, went to Fort Wayne this morning. Miss Jennie Sbackley of Ft. Wayne is here for a few days’ visit with Miss Kate Ginley and other friends. Winifred Smith is recovering from an attack of typhoid fever and is able to be up again, though she is still very : weak. Mrs. Clarence Baughman, Mrs. John i Hill, Mrs. John Potter, were among I the attendants at the Adams county I Sunday school convention held in ' Berne today. Mr. and Mrs. Harry White of Fort ; Wayne arrived in in the city and have i taken positions at the Martin restaur-1 ant, Mr. White acting as chief cook, and Mrs. White being the dining room lady. Miss Golda Teeters has taken a position as dishwasher. John Heller, French Quinn and John Myers, who were appointed as a committee to settle affairs regarding the coming of the sugar beet industry from Holland, Mich., returned home Wednesday evening, having settled matters in a satisfactory manner for the coming of the factory. The Democrat force seems to have selected the same week for their birthdays. Frank Schultz celebrated his Tuesday; W. G. Kist celebrates his with a trip to Fort Wayne this evening, and Martin Ault comes in on the homo stretch with ». birthday anniversary Saturday, that will allow him two days for the festivity.
