George Brown, from south of the city, was among the business callers ( here today. Ed Meyers of Fort Wayne was in the city this morning looking after business affairs. Adolph of Ft. Wayne is 1 making a short visit in the city with his mother, Mrs. Henry The Misses Pansy Bell and Lucile Hale, who have spent the summer at Oden. Mich., will return home Monday. E. M. Wagner of St. Louis, Mich., is in Decatur for a day or two, attending to business matters of importance. Mr. and Mrs. George Gillig of Tiffin, Ohio, are in the city for a visit with his brother, Conrad Gillig. and family, south of the city. Chester imler spent the night in the city with his parents. Rev. and Mrs. Imler, and this morning left for his work at Portland. Paul Harrod of Fort Wayne, who was in the city yesterday afternoon, looking after &me busßtess affairs, returned to his home on the late car.

A large number of people gathered at the scene of the G. R. I. tracks Thursday evening when the wrecking crew replaced a tender and engine on the tracks, which had run off of the derail. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gottemoller I and H. A. Beckman returned to their homes this noon, they being here in I attendance at the funeral of the child of A. A. Gottemoller. They reside at 1 St. Henry’s, Ohio. Mrs. D. B. Erwin very pleasantly enI tertained the members of the Orient club at her home on North Second , street Wednesday afternoon. A delicious luncheon was served, and the usual good time enjoyed.
John Ross, his wife and six children are here from Indianapolis for a visit with relatives and friends John was one of the boys here twenty years ago and found many of the old gang with whom to talk it over. Mrs. E. J. Wilson and daughter, Jeanette, of Cleveland. Ohio, have arrived in the city for a visit with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Myers. This afternoon Mrs. Wilson was the honohed guest of the Thimble dub. and entertained by Miss Bess Schrock. The base ball scores are of much interest to the “fans” each evening now and the arrival of the scores at the various places receiving them are watched with interest. The big fight is between Chicago, New York and Pittsburg in the national game. The last six weeks promises to be warm. Mrs. Oliver Schug of Decatur is suffering from an attack of appendicitis since the first of the week. Rudolph Schug was there Wednesday evening and reports her slightly improved. Other relatives from here who visited her are Mrs. Ix>uis Nead erhouser and children and Miss Stella Schug.—Berne Witness. The Presbyterian Missionary society will meet Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, August 29th, at the home of Mrs. J. C. Patterson. The lesson will be conducted by Mrs. John Schug and the round table by Mrs. Ed Lyon*. Every lady of the church, as well as all friends, are cordially invited to attend. Today noon Rena Tarsha, the pretty little Syrian girl, who ran away from home a week ago, left for Toledo, where she will return to the parental roof. Her uncle, who has spent ten days in the search for her. accompan led her to Toledo. Since her capture in Elwood Wednesday' she has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pe tenon.
The venerable Jacob Wechter has been visiting relatives in New Washington, Ohio, the past two weeks and has now left for Rochester, N. Y., to spend more time with friends and reb atives and to attend the national encampment of the G. A. R. Mr. echter will be eighty years old in September and still gets around hearty and spry.—Willshire Herald. T. W. Best, the well known farmer, who moved to Gymon, Oklahoma, about a year ago, has returned and will probably remain here during the winter at least and perhaps permanently. The change to Oklahoma was made on account of the health of Mrs. ’Best, who has greatly improved, but the altitude proved too high for Mr. Best, who is suffering from stomach trouble and other affections. He will probably rest up for several months before attempting to do anything. Henry Diebold, who has run a salloon at Arcola, north of Fort Wayne, for fourteen years, has had a sudden change of heart, and Tuesday morn-I Ing, without saying a word to any one prior to that time, quietly closed up his place, with the plain statement that he would never sell another drink of liquor. He has hauled out his fixtures and the queer thing about it is that he still has six months' license on which he cannot realise a cent. However, he has a snug fortune, his savings from his fourteen years, and j he will not have to worry '-any <yjout i the wolf at his door.

Mrs. Charles Railing and children returned to Lima, Ohio, after a pleas ant visit of a few days with relatives here. Esther Wolfe of Schumm returned I to that place today after a shopping . tour here. She was accompanied by j her sister, Mary. Mrs. B. F. Breiner left for Chicago today, where she will visit the next two weeks with her daughter, Mrs. Milo Hllyard. F. H. Gottemoller returned to his home at Custer, Ohio, this noon, he being in attendance at the Gottemoller funeral here today. There are eight more days for the missing word contest. The regular fall convocation will be held November 21st, 22nd and 23rd, when degrees, fourth to thirtysecond will be given.
