Should occasion require |
J another call to arms for the defense of the union, the record of that early period which is today being so universally commemorated, will be hard to duplicate. The eighty-ninth regiment was recruited in the old Eleventh district, rendezvoused at Wabash and organized at Indianapolis. They were mustered into service August 28, 1862, with Charles D. Murray as colonel. During their service thir-ty-one were killed, one hundred and sixty-seven wounded and four missing. They marched 2,363 miles on foot, 7,112 by steamer and 1,232 by rail. Among the captains in one of the other companies of the regiment was A. J. Hill, cnce a prominent citizen of Adams county, much of his life being spent as publisher of the Decatur Eagle, now the Democrat His army ; record like his life was clean, sound and patriotic to the core. Company H, 89th Indiana Infantry. Captain A. J. Hill was in charge of this company, his first lieutenant being J. H. Browning, and the second lieutenant, M. V. B. Spencer.
