A JASPER GIRL WINS CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE forced to take her seat. Clara Gilbert was the third to fall, mißsing •ilium.' So it went down the long line, none of the words misled being in common use. Several time* the pronouncer faltered on a decision and once Miss Alexander, referee and au thor of the spelling book, which was used, misspelled a word in explaining how the child to whom it had been given had missed IL “Pronouncer Dunn called ■lineament.’ The child did not understand and Mr. Dunn defined the word as a medicine. Then the child spelled 1' •1-i n-f-m-e-n-t,’ and Mr. Dunn declared that the word was misspelled. Miss Alexander immediately took a hand, declaring that the child had misunderstood and that the definition was not correct. During the inelee some one asked Miss Alexander to spell the word correctly and she unhesitatingly spelled 1-in-a-m-e-n-t’ amid uproarious laughter. “Such little used words as succulent,' •eligible,’ ‘impostor,’ analogues.’ beseech,' •chrysalids,' ‘mademoiselle.’ ‘Jaunty,’ 'blotches.’ 'peered.' ‘buoyant.' ‘courtier,' 'perchance,’ ‘equilaterals,' ‘assiduously,’ 'aliquot,' ’gelid,’ 'trapezoid,' 'feigning,' and 'crypt' were those on which the school children made their errors. “Children from the same county were not allowed to sit together in the line. In the long list of words was a written test of fifty words in which but one child failed to spell correctly. Eulila Martin made a grade of 98 per cent in this contest, misspelling 'mademoiselle.' The-remainder of the children, probably twenty-five of them, spelled each of the fifty words correctly and received grades of 100 per cent. Miss Martin spelled the word on which she was sent to her seat, ‘madamoiselle.’ “All words which were given to the children Thursday to spell will be recorded and a bulletin containing them issued to teachers of the seventh and eighth grades next year for use in the schools of the state. “Vivian Lewis of Argos, representing the Thirteenth district, was the only winner in the district contests who failed to appear for Thursday’s test. No reason was given for her absence. Miss Saib was congratulated by friends and relatives who had attended the match' to cheer her on. After she had received the gold medal the little girl said: “ They tried to beat me in several ways, some of which I didn’t like, but I knew I could win if I could stand up long enough, and I did. I am very glad to be considered to be the best speller in the state, but as I previously had won all such contests that I had been in I was practically sure that I would win today. I have never specialized in spelling. I have attended a parochial school since I started to school. I am glad I have pleased father and mother so much.’ ’’
ABOUT THE SICK. The measles epidemic has struck the Nelson May home in Union township about right, five of the children being sick at the same time with the measles. Theodore Droppieman was reported as being very low Thursday, according to the latest word received from Jeffersonville by his relatives. Attorney L. C. DeVoss, who has been quite sick with heart trouble and asthma, is somewhat better. Mrs. Christena May, the pioneer lady of Union township, who has been helpless since October Bth, from an attack of paralysis, shows no improvement. in fact, it is thought if there is any change it is that she is growing gradually weaker. — .. . . o —— WILL ELECT OFFICERS.
