The “unwritten law'' has won another victory In the verdict just returned at Vincennes. While such things appeal to the majority, it's a dangerous practice. This shooting down of men, cold-blooded, as was the case in this instance, is a mighty poor practice, no difference what the provocation. Mr. Greathouse will do a great thing for the schools of the state if he can actually inspire the teachers to work more persistently and insistently for pure speech—that is grammatical speech. The things one hears, even among tolerably well educated people in this Hoosier land, makes one wince.—lndianapolis News. Just an even dozen shopping days until Christmas. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNERS ALONG MERCER AVENUE Notice is hereby given that on the 16th Day of December, 1910, at 7 o’clock p. m., on said day, the common council of the city of Decatur, Indiana, at the chamber of the common council of said city, will receive and hear remonstrances of all persons against the amounts assessed against their property respectively on the assessment roll hereinafter described and will determine the question as to whether such lots or tracts of land have been or will be benefitted by said improvement in the amounts named on said roll, or in any sum at which place and time ail the owners of such real estate may attend in person or by representative and be heard. Said improvement is of Mercer avenue from Second street along said Mercer avenue to the south line of Grant street in said city. All property within one hundred and fifty feet of said improvement will be liable for assessment. The preliminary assessment roll with the names of owners and description of property subject to be assessed with amounts of prima facie assessments is on file and can be seen at the office of the city clerk of said city. SOCIETY DOINGS A Masquerade Surprise For Mr. and Mrs. F. Brown Last Evening. i AN EVENING PARTY Miss Lulu Atz Entertains at Parents’ Home —Other Social Mention. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops yourself. —Ex. Friday evening the friends and neighbors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown on Adams street. All were masked and their victims were completely surprised. After the guessing contest various games were played and a general good time was had. Then came a delicious lunch of cake, coffee and apples. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Poling and daughter, Mary; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Jones and daughter, Addie; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Snyder and daughter, Nola; Mr. and Mrs. Dorse Hoagland.Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hill and daughter, Mabel; Mr. and Mrs. Noel Bauserman and daughters, Mildred and Pauline, and son, George; Mrs. Agnes Andrews and daughters, Celia and Cecil; Mrs. Sol David and daughters, Nora and Stella, Mrs. Charles Baker, Mrs. Ben Rice, Mrs. William Biggs and daughter, Goldie; Eva Augenbaugh, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Barkley. All departed at a late hour, voting the host and hostess charming entertainers, and each as having a jolly good time. The Twilight club membership in full attendance spent one of the jolly social fortnightly good times Friday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Bailey. In a progressive pedro contest, Mrs. Mike Melbers carried off first honors, while Mrs. Cliffton Haughton was a close second. Then there was an interesting little flower romance, the story of a wedding, told in an interesting way in which blanks ■ were to be filled with the names of , flowers. Mrs. Haughton won the first , honors in this. A delicious luncheon was served during the evening. On ' account of the Christmas holidays, the ' next regular meeting will be postponed. Twenty-two ladies of the Christian Aid society and their friends were entertained Friday afternoon in a very pleasant way by the pastor’s wife, Mrs. J. M. Dawson, at her home on Madison street. The next session will be held with Mrs. Jacob Eady in two weeks, when the annual election of of--flcers will take place. * Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Peoples will entertain the force of the Peoples & Gerke store at supper tomorrow evening. The party will include Alva Nichols and fanfily, Mr. and Mks. Herman Tettman, Miss Clara Bultemeier and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gerke and son. Miss Lulu Atz entertained the T. T. F. girls with a number of their boy friends in a jolly informal way last evening. They told fortunes, toasted marshmallows in the kitchen and enjoyed music add dancing, with de- ' licious refreshments later. Miss Esther Koenemann entertained the Little Quilters’ society yester- : day afternoon, those present being ’ Martha Heckman. Luella Bultemeier, i Ida Gunsett and Marie Boese. After < quilting, light refreshments were < served. Mr. and Mrs. George Everett entertained a number of the members of the postofflce force at a tempting dinner Friday noon-at their home in the south part of the city. Guests were Jesse Helm and Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Mills and children. The Ruth Circle of Loyal Daughters of the Christian church will hold their regular fortnightly meeting Monday evening with Jessie Magley on West Monroe street. The force of the Times office enjoyed a Bohemian spread at noon todayin the workshop of the office, sumptuous viands and jollity and mirth Holding sway around the festive board. One of the work tables was hastily improvised into a dainty dining table the center piece of which was a mound of apples and oranges, beautiful in their colorings of red and yel low.
