SOAKS THE BOSS (Continued trn:u u 2.) their friends, were thoroughly aroused. Instead of settling the contest quickly, Senator Beveridge let the applicants fight among themselves until a satisfactory settlement was out of the question. No matter which way it was decided, there was bound to be soreness in its wake. At this stage of the proceedings, a proposition was made to Senator Beveridge to let the people settle the matter by a primary. Such a primary was to be held in that county at that time for another purpose. There would have been no additional expense and it would have been clearly a case of permitting the "voice of the people" to be heard in the selection of their postmaster, instead of leaving It to the judgment of a besieged politician. But. did Senator Beveridge consent, and follow out in practice the doctrine he had been and is preaching? No. He would have none of his perquisites taken from him. He assumed responsibility, took the affair from the people, and named the man himself — the one that had been postmaster previously. In that county the people take Senator Beveridge’s professions for just what they are worth. They know how he is playing politics and that his cry of "down with the bosses" comes not from his heart, but is merely a phrase with which to fool the people. o PUBLIC SALE.
