CHAS. SIMCOKE TREASURER. Resigns to Take Position With Large Manufacturing Company. Charles Simcoke, former teacher of the commercial department of t’ catur high school, but who for the past seven or eight years has held a position as teacher in the commercial department of tne St. Louis (Mo.) high school, writes friends here that he has resigned as teacher there and has already accepted a position as treasurer for the St. Louis Basket & Box company. This Is a company of $500,000 capitai stock, with extensive acreage in the south, and is one of the leading manufacturing plants In St. Louis. The salary going with the position is an excellent one, and his friends here are pleased to know of his success. TAKEN TO EASTHAVEN. Sheriff Meyer went to Berne this morning and from there accompanied Johnathan Hirschey to the East Haven asylum at Richmond. Mr. Hirschey has been somewhat demented for some time and it was thought best to take him to the institution for treatment that he might regain his mental faculties. At no time has ne been dangerous, but on different occasions has showed weakness of mind and it is hoped that by the treatment at Easthaven he will be permanently cured. ■<> —- — FILE YOUR BILLS. SOME STATISTICS ON CROPS. Government Department Issuee a Bulletin as to the Estimate. (United Press Service.) Washington, D. C„ May 9—(Special to Daily Democrat) —The bureau of Btatlctics this afternoon estimated that on May Ist the area of winter wheat was 29,004,000 acres or 2.5 per cent less than the acreage shown last fall, which was 31,034,000 acres. The average condition of wheat on the same date was 82.1 per cent as compared with 80.8 on April Ist. The average condition of rye on May Ist was 91.3 as compared with 93.3 on April. Planting was 65 per cent completed as against 54 per cent a year ago. - . - ATTEND CONVENTION. Charles S. Niblick and H. J. Yager, grand knight and deputy grand knight for the local order of the Knights of Columbus, left this noon for Gary, Ind., where they will attend the state convention which begins there Tuesday. Nearly every council In the state will be represented at this meeting and some very important business pertaining to the interest of the lodge will be transacted. A number of addresses will be given at this time by the higher officers of the order and the assembly will be an important one.
