The < exact nature of the ailment will not i be known until after the operation, t as her case is a very baffling one, but 1 Dr. Rosenthal stated that the liver was much enlarged and tne gall duct closed. Unless the operation reveals a cancerous growth of the liver, there are chances for her recovery. Four physicians here had decided that the operation was the only hope but Mrs. Reynolds, who is much opposed to operating, sought doctor after doctor with the hope that ft could be cured without. She is a sister of Mrs. William Murphy of this city and the late Mary J- Meitz, and having spent the greater part of her life here has many friends who will hope for the complete restoration of her health. WIN SCHOLARSHIP. (United Pre** nor vice.) Bloomington, Ind., Jan. 19. —(Special to Daily Democrat) —Elma Gavis of Aurora, Ind., a senior in Franklin college, has been chosen by the Indiana commission as the Indiana representative to Rhoades college at Oxford, England. The anouncement was made by William Bryan./president of Indiana University Tuesday night after he had taken the vote of the committee by long distance telephone. 0 Made Certain of It. A through train on the Rock Island stopped a few moments at the Englewood station one day. A passenger got off to wulk around a little. As the train began to move again the passenger jumped aboard, but just then be discovered that he had but one overshoe. Thinking that he dropped the other somewhere on the platform and as the train was going too fust for him to jump off and recover it. he pulled off the remaining shoe and threw it on the platform, exclaiming, “There—that makes a good pair of overshoes for somebody." Entering the car. he proceeded to his seat. There, to his great astonishment, was his overshoe. A look of intense disgust came upon his face, but he did not hesitate. Quickly picking up the lone arctic, he hurried to the platform, threw the shoe as far a* be could back toward the other one and shouted. “By jlmlny, there is a pair of overshoes for somebody Argonaut Logic, Feminine Brand. “I don’t like to play cards for money, but 1 don't in the least mind playing for a prize." is the attitude of several New York women who have recently got up a club. Who was to furnish the prizes was another question. They didn’t wish to have the woman at whose home they happened to be playing buy prizes in addition to a little luncheon. Finally one of the members suggested a plan which has met the approval of all the women concerned, and It has been adopted in the club. At the beginning of the game each player puts up a quarter, so that there is a prize of a dollar at each table for the winner. That is perfectly logical and the eternal feminine way of getting out of a difficulty. They don’t want to play for money, but it is all right to play for prizes, whatever they may be. And the prizes happen to be money. No matter.—New York Press. Hi* Conclusion. “And this,” said the young man who was showing his country relatives through the Museum of Art. “is a replica of the Venus de Milo.” “Gosh.” said his Uncle Amasa, “she was a good looker, all right! Wa’n’t never married, was she?” “No; I don’t believe she ever was.” “I s’pose. bein’ armless and not havin’ a husband to hook up her clo’s, she simply had to dress that way, no matter whether she liked it or not.” —Chicago Record-Herald. His Memory. “Has he a good memory?” “No, just a common, ordinary, everyday memory. He remembers people who owe him money much better than those to whom he owes money.”—Detroit Free Press.
