J. H. HELLER. Msnaqer A WARD POLITICIAN AND NOT A STATESMAN To the average Uyman it is next to revolting to read of the president of j the United States bolding up the ap- ] pointments of the senators and con-1 gressmen, simply because those sens- j tors and congressmen do not believe | as do the president and Speaker Cannon, as to certain legislation. If the j key to statesmanship is to agree with the president and speaker, the ques-| tion naturally arises why have a con-i gress and senate, and why not turn the affairs of the government over to the two wise men of the country, the president and speaker, and save the money. The very spirit of American independence is shattered by this example of ward politics as being played from the white house. The dig-1 nity of the presidency is lowered, and ! President Taft could have done nothing that would have shown to the world his utter unfitness to grace the highest office within the gift of the American people. The people wanted ; to think better of President Taft, they j were willing to trust him and to believe in him. but the tactless blunder-' ing of using official power given him by a trusting people, shows that he is not measuring up to the standard of a president The best thing that the president can do, is to call off the dogs of war. Allen county democrats are starting the game early this year and al-! ready the field is pretty well covered

THE' SOCIAL NOTES German Reformed Ladies Elect Officers for Their Aid Society. A GREAT SUCCESS Was the Ball Given by Columbian Club—Pocahontas Installation. The dance given Wednesday evening by the Columbia club at their hail was a success throughout, and until the midnight hour the invited guests and lovers of this art enjoyed a very pleasant time. Forty-three couples were present and had the weather been favorable a much larger crowd would have been there. From 8 until 8:45 the usual dancing lessons were given by Fred Schurger and quite a number are taking instructions. The first dance was called at 8:45 and the pastime was contiuef! for three consecutive hours. ■ Excellent music was furnished during the evening by Messrs King and Drake, and was much appreciated by all. The club has the reputation of being royal entertainers' and another dance will be given in the near future, but the date will not as yet be made public. Misses Helen and Dorothy Walters were entertained at a slumber party last night by Miss Irene Evans at her home north of the city. . ■ The installation of the officers newly elected by the Pocahontas lodge will take places this evening. The meeting of the German Reformed Ladies' Aid society at the home of Mrs. John Christen of Walnut street Wednesday afternoon was attended by about thirty-five and was a most interesting session.
