I HONOROFOLDAND NEW (Continued from page 1.) for the high honor and his friends have every confidence In his ability, knowing that he will serve the district in a most'creditable manner. Bom in this township, fifty-three years ago, October Ist, he has been a continuous resident of Adams county. His life has been a model one. his habits exemplary and for nearly thirty years he has been a most industrious student and practicioner of the law. His parents were Charles Wesley and Mary Archbold Merryman, who settled in the Hoosier state in 1836. The present judge was educated in the schools of Decatur, showed remarkable ability and when but sixteen years of age began teaching school. He followed that avocation for six years or until 1876, when he was appointed clerk of the Adams circuit court, in which capacity he served until 1880, when he accepted a position with the Adams county bank. In 1881 he was elected mayor of this city and served two years. For sometime prior to this time he had been a devoted student of Blackstone and other law texts and in 1883 formed a partnership with the late John T. France, which continued until 1898. Since that date he has been the senior member of the firm of Merryman and Sutton until a few months ago and since his election to his present high office, when the firm dissolved. Judge Merryman was married August 29, 1878 to Miss Louise P. Albers, of Willshire, Ohio, who with four children Mrs. Don L. Quinn, Miss Frances Charles, of Paragould, Ark., and Master Robert, share the popularity of the honored jurist. Judge Merryman has every qualification for a successful judge and his term will be one of merit.
JUDGE ERWIN. Few men in public lite in Indiana have endeared themselves more to those he sevred than the jurist, Richard K. Erwin, who retires from the bench of the twenty-sixth judicial circuit. His record is one to which his many admirers point with pride and his popularity has but Increased during his six years service in the highest office in the county. He was born in old Union township, this county, July 11, 1860, his parents being David and Mary Ellen Erwin. Judge Erwin was educated in the county schools, with one term at the old M. E. college at Fart Wayne, and one term at the county normal at Decatur. He taught school and farmed until April 1, 1887, when he came to Decatur and began the practice of law, forming a partnership with J. Fred France, of Huntington. In 1884 he was elected as justice of the peace of Union township and served one year. In 1890 he was nominated and elected representative to the lower house of the Indiana legislature and was re-elected in 1892, serving four years with great credit to himself and his constituency. During the session of 1892, he served on a number of the most important committees and as chairman of the democratic caucus, being an acknowledged leader of the Democratic side of the house. On January 12, 1900, he was nominated for judge of this judicial circuit and elected by a handsome majority the following November. He assumed his robes of office, November 23, 1901, and has proven his ability as a jurist beyond any question of doubt. In 1906 Judge Erwin was nominated at the democratic state convention as the party’s candidate for judge of the supreme court and his vote was far in excess of the rest of his ticket, thus again demonstrating his ability as a vote getter. January 17, 1883, at Monroeville, Judge Erwin was united in marriage to Miss Luella A. Wass, a
daughter of W. J. B. Wass, of Union township, this county. Three sons and two daughters now complete their happy family and home. Judge Erwin has, during his term of six years, disposed of a great deal of business. o NOTICE. All person assessed in either of the following ditches: August Heusellman, H. L. Smith. Frank C. MOSE HAS SKIPPED Big Fellow Who Worked Smooth Job at Indianapolis Has Flown. JUMPED HIS BOND Had the Amount Reduced to S2OO and Left Bondsmen Hold Sack. Mose Krohn, who for a number of years, honored Decatur by calling it his home, and who was indicted by a United States grand jury and arrested for impersonating a rural route inspector and thus obtaining money, has skipped out, leaving his bondsmen to hold the sack. He was arrested at Indianapolis and held in jail there several days, being unable to furnish the required bond of SSOO. Later he apperaed in court and asked to have the bond reduced to S2OO, saying he would be able to give that amount of bail. The court granted the request and sure enough Mose was lucky enough to induce some Indianapolis people to sign the bond with him. A few days later one of the bondsmen wanted off, but when they went In search of Mose, he had completely disappeared. Up to date he has not been apprehended though the U. S. deputies believe he will be landed again and eventually tried.
