THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS.

Mr. Hlmes Resigns the Superlntendency of the Poor Farm and William Brown Is Appointed—

Other Business.

The county commissioners Monday succeeded in completing the business of the session. Samuel Himes, who had been appointed superintendent of the county poor farm to succeed George Myers, tendered his resignation and William Brown was appointed in his place. Mr. Brown is at present an employe of the Big Four road as a bridge carpenter.

Timothy O'Conner and Charles Pitcher were granted licenses to sell liquor in Crawfordsville.

M. T. Marshall, of Waynetown, was refused a liquor license, the remonstrance against him being held good.

The commissioners acted favorably on the application of Newton Heath and others for the vacation of a highway and appointed Allen Robertson, Wm. Stitt, and Joseph Hall as viewers. v,-,/

The matter of the petition of Wilson Hunt andjothers for a highway, James Taylor, A. S. McClamrock and John Nolan were appointed as viewers.

The viewers appointed in the matter of the petition of Samuel Walton and others for the vacation of a highway, reported favorably and the vacation was ordered.

A favorable report -on the vacation and relocation of a'hiphvrav petitioned for by Noah Brock was made and the commissioners ordered the change.

Declined the Call.

Lafayette Cult Rev. T. J. Shuey, of Valparaiso, yesterday morniug announced to the congregation of the First Christian] church that he had decided not tolaccept the call to the pulpit of that church. He does not care to leave his present location. He stated, however, that he will be glad to assist the congregation at any time and will come here to preach whenever he is able. The announcement was quite a disappointment to the members of the church, as Mr. Shuey has made many friends since he first came here on evangelistic duty several weeks ago.

Wheat Harvest In Progress.

The wheat harvest in Montgomery county began Monday and quite a fair per cent, of the crop has now been cut, It is reported that the wheat is everywhere heavy and promises a good yield. Unhappily the acreage in the county this year is very small, the failures of the two preceding years having discouraged many of the farmers.

Hacks Removed.

Last Tuesday Marshal Brothers removed the hacks and moving vans from the court house corner, where they have long been an eye sore, to north Washington street below the old Sherman house.

Daniel Boweo Takes Out License Marry Hortense E. Price.

Last Tuesday a couple of the young friends of Bowen appeared at the clerk's office and took out license for him to wed Miss Price. While they were taking out the document an attorney appeared and stated that Miss Price's relatives had telephoned him to stop the proceedings. This he was unable to do, however, as both parties were of age. The young men swore to the afiidavit, paid for the license, and departed. The request was made that the license be not published this week but the relatives of the bride elect were evidently already aware of what was on foot as was proved by their telephoning their attorney. They are bitterly opposed to the marriage but it seems that tbey are impotent.

When William Price, of Sugar Creek township, died some time ago he left his daughter, Hortense E. Price, property worth about $15,000 She was and still is a girl in feeble health and almost blind. Soon after her father's death a petition was filed in court asking to have a guardian appointed for the girl, her relatives stating that she was preparing to wed Daniel Bowen, when in no condition to do eo. It was openly insinuated that Mr. Bowen was attracted more by the girl's money than anything else. Miss Price appeared in court and proved herself sane to the sj.tisfact.ion of Judge West, who upon her consent, however, appointed a guardian. He stated that this was done-because her poor eyesight would hardly permit her to care for her business.

Buck. -After the installation exercises, which were ably conducted by our noble and high esteemed brother Jacob Joel, assisted by a corps of the representative members of Crawfordsville lodge, a spread of good things in the way of sandwiches, lemonade, banacas, ice cream and cigars was enjoyed by all present which was rendered by a committee of two of the'oldest members in the lodge, Bros. VanSlyke and Miller. When the inner man was well filled speeches were made by Bros. Elam Murphy, W. D. Jones, Geo. Brower, Otto Carlson, C. W. Burton, and Jacob Joel, which were on subjects appertaining to the good of the order and all present expressed their delight at being able to affiliate.

Excursion to Louisville, Ky.

On Sunday, July 7, the Monon will run special excursion train, Crawfordsville to Louisville, Ky,, and return. Special excursion train will leave Crawfordsville at 5:45 a: m., arriving at Louisville at 12 o'clock, noon. Returning special excursion train will leave Louisville Sunday night, June 7, at8:30.
