Ind., April
9.-An
article in the JS'cws-licricw of April 8th seemed to have^been written for the sole purpose of doing Roe Miller an injustice and the discouragement of all persons that [are?, so unlucky as to be compelled to look for stolen property. As on all such occasions' Prank Custer immediately sought the assistance of Roe Miller in the search for his horse and bugyy, and Roe in many ways tried to assist him. The rigjwas taKen on Friday night and not until the morning following did they find a clew. Then came one positive. Custer and Miller starting Tuesday morning traced the rig through central and northern Ohio. When compelled to return home they placed the case in the hands of an experienced detective who followed the case and we believe located the man. He then notified Miller who immediately went and found the suspect, as he is called, at his home in London, Ohio, Rafter an absence of some thirty days. There, he in connection with the authorities there formed a chain of evidence around this man that warranted Roe in having him arrested and bringing him here for trial. As to Roe assuming the roll of detective he did not have to, as he [holds a certificate of membership No. 3,554, and is known and recognized as such all over the country, and has more men in the penitentiary to-day to his individual credit than any man in the county. As to the Garfield blacksmith, of course that was intended as a slur on Garfield, as they have no paved streets. Now the facts in this case are, Miller has done lots of hard work on the case at the request and expense of Custer and so far they are [perfectly satisfied and have already expended more money than the rig was worth but are willing to yet put up if by so doing one horse thief will be confined for a time.
What the outcome *of this trial may Dring we cannot say but that this-man, Sefrit has a brother we know, one of them was here and the other near here. Custer has lost a good rig and plenty of money and only by a big and united effort can this gang be broken up. XX
