Lord Kitchener Still Boldly Ton fronted By invading Boers.

LONDON AGAIN ANXIOUS

Tlic Paucity ami Obscurity of South African Dispatches (Jive Iise lo Apprehension.

Anotlicr 'Tnlortunate Occurcucc"|Is I.VjMirtctl From I he Tliick of tho Field.-

London, Dec. 27.—The paucity and obscurity ol the dispatches from South Africa give rise to renewed anxiety. Apparently tin- disturbed area of (.'ape Colony extends further south than it did lasr December and Lord Kitchener does not appear to have~~had much success as yet in driving bfck the invaders.

The war office has received no news of the reported capture of yeomanry near Britstown. A Burghersdorp dispatch has a mysterious reference to "An unfurlmiale mistaking of the enemy for lira Slant's horse," which resulted in the sounding of a "cease fire" and enabled the Boers to occupy nil the commanding positions, the British retiring from a difficult predicament. General Clement's success

against the Boers in Die Magaliesberg region is also doubtful, the last dispatch reporting that "It was considered advisable not to force the Boers from their positions."

The British press continues in tlie main optimistic, but the condition of affairs brings home the enormous difficulties that will face I.ord Kitchenin a in a in uien.se tracts of country, even when tlie Boers shall be finally subdued. The Daily Mail, which makes a strong appeal iho government to "face the facts and send Lord Kitchener more troops," says: "There is a real risk In lieinir lulled to sleep by carefully oen so red messages."

Lord Kitclicnor, according to a dispatch from Johannesburg, has issued a proclamation dated lYetoria, Dec. ko, announcing that burghers who voluntarily surrender will be allowed .to live with their families in the government laagers until such time as guerilla warfare lias sullicicntly abated to admit of their returning in safety to their homes. The proclamation also promises that nil property and stock brought in at the lime of surrender will lie respecied and paid for if requisitioned h.v. the military authorities.

Empress Dowager Will Not He Jiecoi^nized.

Pekin, Dec. 1*7.—Mr. Conger takes a hopeful view of the situation and I thinks that a settlement, will be of- I footed, but he declares that no one of the eincvs will recognize the empress dowager otlicially. although ail are aware that, she has long exercised the supreme power. He believes the crisis will result in the initiation of reforms in China.

Senor De Cologan, the Spanish minister. fears that tlie discussion of the joint nole, alter general acceptance, will extend for a year or more. It is rumored that numerous villages east of Pekin are combining to exterminate native Christians, several of whom have been burned in a local leniplo. Li Hung Chang is a trifle better.

[merest in* Claim established. Washington, Dec. i!7,— Brigadier General Hcywood. commandant of the marine corps, has forwarded to the navy department a letter from Captain Charles D. Long, serving with the marines in China, stating that the American marines were the first to enter the forbidden city. There has been much controversy as to whether the Russians. British. Germans or Americans were lirst inside tlie sacred precincts of the forbidden city, and the letter is regarded as establishing the claims of the Americans to have been the lirst on the ground'.

Terrible Continuation.

Pekin. Dec. "7. -Itev. .Mr, Kelly, the Presbyterian missionary who reported to Minister Conger the burning by Boxers of lb Catholic Christians, now reports having received further confirmation of the burning of native Christians, lie now says ihe number burned is and he adds that thousands of armed Chinese have been seen in the San llo country. Mr. Conger has sent a copy of the communication to Field Marshal Count Von Waldersee. and Japanese and German troops have been sent to investigate the reports.
