In the Battle.

ON RURAL ROUTES-
Report of Special Agent About Their Wonting in Indiana.
F. M. Dice, superintendent of the western division of the rural mail service, has received the annual report of P. S. Hea'«h, first assistant postmastergeneral, reviewing the work of the department. It contains a report of Bpecial agent E. H. Hathaway, who spent several months in Indiana, organizing routes in country districts He says: "One of the important objections to doing away with fourth-class postoffices is the distances patrons have to go in order to register letters or packages. I have seen instances where, in place of a three mile Journey, which was formerly necessary, they had to go ten miles, after the rural delivery service had succeeded the fourth-class offices. If rural carriers could be authorized to do this registry business, it would be a great gain in favor of the free delivery. "The salary paid rural mail carriers is not adequate compensation, when it is considered that they have to supply their own horses and vehicles. Sooner or later it will be found advis

able to pay rural carriers enough salary
BO
that they will be satisfied with
little or nothing 'on the side' to help sustain themselves. As a rule, the carriers do not make 3100 a year from all their outside commissions, and most of them would be glad to receive a salary of 8500 a year and forego the right to do business for themselves while on duty. "In Indiana the service has an advantage of an enthusiastic patronage, together with a country level in the main, traversed by excellent roads, thickly populated communities of intelligent andenterprising people, who show a willingness to do all that is required by the government in fitting up the routes with boxes. I inspected routes for nearly two months in Indiana and have found by careful observation more than 300 miles of road in the country have been graded and graveled by patrons of the rural mail routes, in and endeavor to have them made a permanent thing."

The Power of Price
the larg
est corn «crop ever reported for the state, and the reports are in general concurrence that the crop is a more nearly merchantable one than in several former years. The average production by counties is very high in nearly all sections of the state.
The smallest-average yield in any county is reported at twenty-six and one-half bushels per acre, while the largest yield is reported at fifty-six bushels per acre, that of Tipton county, which, years ago, before surface and tile drainage became geperal, was reckoned a poor county in agriculture, but which drainage has made one of the most productive in the s:ate in this great cereal. The same is true of many other counties in the level plateau of the state which lay high and many years ago were reckoned too wet for profitable agriculture. Alto gether the corn production of Indiana is the greatest in the history of the state. The aggregate yield ranges
9"4
9"4
from 5,226,614 bushels in Warren county down to 279,356 bushels in Floyd cottnty, but it should be said that Floyd county had a small area of corn and is never reckoned a. great corn county, though its average yield is above thirty-three bushels per acre.
Lost His Leg.
Sunday, in Chicago, the leg of Ed Streight, formerly of this city, was amputated. The limb was originally injured in the war and was more rerecently injured by a fall, which rendered amputation necessary.
A Change of Firm.

Used By British Soldiers in Africa.
Capt. C. G. Dennison is well known all over Africa as commander of the forces that captured the famous rebel Galishe. Under date of Nov. 4, 1897, from Vryburg, Bechuanaland, he writes. "Before starting on the campaign I bought a quantity of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, which I used myself when troubled with bowel complaint, and had given to my men, and in every case it proved most beneficial," For sale by Nye & Booe, druggists.
