Those in a position to know state that there has been more wood sold in Crawfordsville this winter than during any three winters since the introduction of natural gas. Every morning a large number of wagons come in from the country loaded with wood, and the drivers have no difficulty in disposing of their goods at a rattling good price.

Last Monday J. R., Bonnell entertained about twenty of the friends of Chief Justice Burford at a dinner party. The function was a most enjoyable one and the evening was very delightfully passed. Judge Burford has succeeded in Oklahoma in a manner which is in line with his deserts and which is extremely gratifying to his many warm friends in Crawfordsville.

The Darlington Theory Answered. To the Editor of the Journal. In reply to the person who wrote about the hydrophobia at Garfield we will say that they are off of their nest. The reason the dogs did not go mad was because they were not bitten whils the dog had a snasm as were the hogs. What will the Darlington scribe do about the poor horses of S. P. Vangundy which died with hydrophobia? Also H. S. Binford and Mr. McCoy each lost a cow from the same effect as the horBes died. Anybody with reasonable knowledge will say that a hog that dies with the cholera does not die like a hog with hydrophobia. We humbly ask the "West End of Darlington" to tell us who sold the beer, when and where. We never did expect anything from the "West End of
Darlington" and now we never Bhall. X. Y. Z.

COL- SEXTON'S DEATH-
Geueral Order IH«U«1 From Headquarters of the G. A, It.
Tha following general order relating to the death of Col. Sexton, com-mander-in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, was issued from the G. A. R. headquarters in Independence Hall "The senior vice commander-in-chief announces with sadness the death of our beloved commander-in-chief, James A. Sexton, who died at the Garfield Memorial Hospital, Washington, D. C., on Sunday, Feb. 5, 1899. When the summons came it found him at the post of duty serving aB a member of the commission appointed by the President of tbe United States to investigate the conduct of the war with Spain. As a soldier, citizen and comrade he performed with conspicuous fidelity every duty devolving upon him and discharged with faithfulness every trust committed to his care. He was our leader and filled the highest place to which we could call him and worthily enjoyed the highest honor the Grand Army of the Republic could confer. No comrade or soldier was more thoroughly representative of tbe great comradeship of the war for the suppression of the rebellion.
We honored ourselves when we honored him, and now that he has been called to the silent bivouac of the dead, let all comrades join in paying fitting tribute to his memory. "Department headquarters and post headquarters and charters will be draped, and national department and post colors placed in mourning (two streamers of crepe seven feet long, twelve inches wide, and attached to ferrule below spearheads), and nation al department and post officers will wear the badge of mourning for sixty days from date of his death. "The interment will take place from his late residence in Chicago, and the department commander of the depart ment of Illinois is charged with the duty of furnishing proper funeral es cort. "By command of
