There is considerable excitement in the quiet and prosperous neighborhood of Fairview school house, Scott township, growing out of an attempted robbery of Thomas Clark, Jr., a pr iminent and most peacable citizen. Mr. Clark has long since been knowii as a man of means who usually carries a pretty good wad on his person and while inoffensive, being a man of giant proportions and Herculian strength, is a terror to evil doers in this locality. Certainly no person who knows him would ever cross his path under the

most favorable circumstances, much lees attempt to murder and rob him in single handed combat in a deseri«d woods on a very dark and stormy night. But it is clear from the reports of Mr. Clark and the fragments of his lantern, the condition of his clothing and the evident scramble from the tracks and torn up earth on the spot where the fight was pulled off, th^t some stranger ran against taller game than he was looking for. Mr. Olark says while whistling his old familiar tunc, 'Old Mibs Diner," sr/.d watching the shadow of his long shanks ack together scissor-like as if clipping the forest trees down rightgand left, a tall, gaunt specter leaped out fiom behind an old oak tree and without shaking hands deliberately attempted to land a straight right hand jab. Parrying his blow Mr. Olark Int lot so with hia large, heavy lantern which would make a good light hoi Si on a im,ejpHkj beach, and drove his assailant into thei earth. Tbe flying missels of the broken lantern pealing the bark off of the trees for yards around and Etreaks of light like shooting meteors nabled Mr. C'a'k to discover that death, hell and destruction lay buried at his feet, and in the confusion the robber made his escape. There arp manv believers and unbelievers regarding the attack.
