Ermie Lee spent Saturday night and Sunday with Mamie Long. Mrs, Fred West and children, Raymond and Mabel, of Seattle, Wash., are visiting relatives here.
Miss Nora Sands of Garfield, is here spending a few days with friends before going to her school at Veedersburg.
On last Saturday evening quite a number of the young folks gathered at the home of Miss Fannie Long and planned a surprise on her, the refreshments being candy, peanuts, bananas and nuts. Those present were: Misses Mayme Smith, Virgie and Mattie Sayers, Ermine Lee, Anna Fenton, Lide (ireen, May Barley, Ethel Campbell, Blanche VVisehart, Mamie Long, Cora Campbell, and Mrs. Wheeler and daughter Anna of Chicago and Messrs Lawrence Long, Basil and Phillip Cox, Wayne Shelton, Charlie Lee, Sherman Moore, Charlie Lontr, Fred Barley, Ward Enoch, Will Wisehart, Charlie Walters, Georgo Enoch and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce West. All went home wishing Miss Fannie many more such happy birthdays. She received some nice presents, a vase from Mrs. George Enoch, a souvenir spoon from Mies Lide Green, and a vase from Miss Mamie Long.
POTATO CREEK.
Saul Tyree spent Sunday with J. A. Dodd. S. K. Blue was quite sick last week but is up again.
Mart Gray took a carload of hogs to Indianapolis Tuesday. AUie Peterson and family were at Clint Tribbett's Sunday.
J. A. Dodd aud wife visited Wm. Ormsby and wife Sunday. Wm Ormsby is improving his place with some new wire fence.
Gill Boots and family Sundayed in Darlington with Wm. Boots. Wm. Price attended Sunday school last Sunday. He is well again.
Lute Coyner and wife visited their son George, near Clark's Hill, Sunday. The funeral of Jacob Campbell was largely attended. Another pioneer has gone.
Mrs. Lute Coyner and Mrs. Violet 0rm6by took in the excursion to Marion Tuesday.
We extend our sympathy to the bereaved wife, children and friends of Jacob Campbell.
G. D. Snyder lost a cow Saturday by being' clovered. Sunday, Aug. 21, he had a calf struck by lightning.
W. 0. Ormsby's peach trees are breaking down with fruit and had the leaf curl, too, while the peaches all fell off in other localities.

Several from here are attending the meetings at Russellville. Mrs Dorcas Hunt and daughter, of Crawfordsville, are visiting here.
Samuel Williams and wife, of Kentucky, are visiting relatives here. Cabe Davis and family, of Lebanon, were guests of relatives here over Sunday. 4.
Several from here went' on the excursion to Lake Maxinkuckee last Sunday.
Charley Vancleave and wife were gueots of relatives near Waveland Sunday.
Little Eva Hartman has been very bad sick for the lost week, but is better now.
Mrs. Bell Davis and daughter, of Frankfort, are visiting here for a ahort time.
John Vancleave and family, of Elmdale, were guests of relatives here last week.
John Wilson and family, of near Waveland, were guests of Robert Goff Sunday.
There wan a man here last week taking tin type pictures. They were good pictures.
Several from here attended Wallace's circus at Crawfordsville Wednesday of last week.

The new school building at Center is fast nearing completion. It will be a credit to the township.
The Newtown fair has become quite an affair, as thousands on the grounds laBt Saturday can testify.
Will Clarkson, Corwin Beach and Charley Ochiltree were among those who went to Indianapolis last week.
Charley Lewis killed a large rattlesnake while he and his wife were on their way to church last Sunday evening.
Clarence McClure, of Co. M, attended the old settlers' meeting at Meharry's, He had on his uniform and was greeted by his many friends.
Jim Barnett got a bug in his ear while threshing at Mr. Cone's. Mr. Cone acted as M, D. and extracted his bugship by the aid of a small hairpin.
Mrs. Lanettie Campbell, nee Gregory, of Cincinnati, is visiting her cousin, J. D. Thomas, and other friends. She spent her girlhood days here, being the daughter of Rev. Samuel Gregory.
Misses Grace and Edna Thomas failed to take their visit mentioned in our last letter, on account of the rain. We desire in our letters to misrepresent nothing, to make no fa)s9 statements or prevarications.
The following visitors have recently been here: Ii.ev. L. W. Bannon, of Waynetown, at his brother, James' llev. J. S. Maxwell, of Crawfordsville, at J. D. Thomas' Joe Battenburg's cousin, Walter Battenburg, from California, and Mr. and Mrs. Harmon, of Champaign, Ills., and Mr. «and Mrs. Lease, of Charleston, 111 at his residence.
The old settlers' meeting at Meharry's Grove in this year of lSUS will long be remembered on account of the unusual, peculiar and sad occurrence there. Ex-Governor Matthews had been listened to with marked attention. Ilis address of a little more than thirty minutes' length was plain, sensible and instructive, lie commenced by saying: "This is called the garden spot of the world, and it might be BO were it not for Vermiilion county." He said Indiana was a great Btate and that he was proud of it. He showed her greatness in its many phases—the character of her pioneers, her natural resources, her agricultural facilities and products—and compared it with other 6tates in this respect, and of her splendid school systems and priviledges. He spoke of some of her great statesmen and authors, and mentioned Oliver P. Morton and Thomas A. Hendricks, Lew Wallace and Riley and more than all, he expressed the thought of our gratitude to God, our Father, for such wonderful guidance and beneficient gifts. He could hardly have done more had he known this was to be his last speech. He said all that he had intended to. A moment after be sat down he remarked to President McKinney that be felt strangely, which were his last words We attended his funeral at Meharry's, which was an impressive service.

Harry Legins and wife visited Oliver Dickson and wife Sunday. John Stone and wife visited relatives near Shannondale Sunday.
Levi Shirley was thrown from a load of hay and had his leg broken. Mrs. Frank Brown and daughter Edith are visiting in Waveland.
Misses Pearl Bell and Lillie Bowman visited Miss Mabel Beck Tuesday. Several from here attended the funeral of Mrs. Sarah Ridge at Ladoga Sunday.
Mrs. Susan Bowman and Mrs. Mollie Martin took dinner with Fannie White in Ladoga Sunday.
J. B. Logan and family of Thorntown, and Miss Pearl Bell of Ladoga, visited at O. C. Bowman's Monday.
Little Ivan, son of Roswell and Mary Smith, was born May 4, 180S, and died Aug. 23, aged four months Little Ivan leaves father and mother and a host of friends to mourn his death fii6 remains were laid to rebt in the Pleasant View cemetery.

The sick are improving. Billy Bagly's little girl is on the sick list.
Mary Swank is staying with Mrs. Emma Moore. Harve Sweeney bought a horse from his father Monday.
Hall Davis has bought Jake Surface's threshing machine. Mrs. Belle Utterback, who has been very sick, is some better.
Quite a number from here attended the Newtown fair last week. Carlton Moore talks of taking a trip to Hot Springs for rheumatism.
Myrtlo Coons, of Lafayette, has concluded a visit with relatives here. Steve Sweeney went to work Monday for Mr. Butler at Shannondale.
Winford Sweeney presented his son, Frank, with a bicycle a few days ago. Mrs. Hays has been visiting her daughter at Wingate for the past week.

Girtie and Sadie Miller have gone to New Richmond to work in the canning factory.
Charley Brown lost the last horse he had last week, it getting choked to death on oats.
Uncle Andy Biddle, of Waynetown, is vis'ting his son, George, and family here for a few days.
James Quick and family and Sarah Cowan attended the M. E, quarterly at Wingate last Sunday.
Mrs. Katie Vancleave, of- Crawfordsville, was the guest of her parents here the first of the week.
R. Gray, of Waynetown, has put up a tomb stone at the grave of Dr. Olin'a little daughter.
Uncle Jackson Quick and wife have returned from a week's visit with his brother and niece in Illinois.
John Shelley and daughter, of Vermillion county, were the guests of his mother at this place Monday
Bill Alien is putting up some wire fence for George Petro. He is also putting a fence around his own yard.
Joe Bowers and wife left Tuesday for Pennsylvania to visit his people. They expect to be gone two or three months.
Grandfather Rusk and family, of Kansas, was the guest of ^Willie Merrill Sunday and attended"the Baptist meeting at this place.
Mrs. Lillie Applegate, of Marion, is visiting relatives at this place. She bnd her sister, Maggie are going to keep bouse for their parents while they are away.
That two-?egged varment that is gathering up the turkeys and chickens had bstter look out. Somebody has their gun loaded and that varment might get hurt and hurt bad.
The Sunday school convention at this place was well attended. They had a good programme and it was carried out nicely. The ladies were thanked very much for the dinner they had prepared.
Mack Smith and family, of northeast of Crawfordsville, were the guests of his sister, Mrs John Phillips and family, near this place Saturday and attended meeting at the Baptist church here Sunday.
Those who took in the excursion to Marion Tuesday were Wright Alexander and family, Wesley Grubbs and daughter, Levi Coons and wife, Miles Bratton, Frank and Bert Woods, and Henry Liwallen.
Steve Sweeney made a surprise on his brother, Winford, Tuesday evening and invited the neighbors in to eat ice cream and cake with him. They all had a nice time until a late hour. They had music by the string band.
Frank Sweeney had very bad luck on his way to Crawfordsville the other day. He was riding his wheel and going down the big hill near Sugar Creek he lost all control of it and run into the bank. The wheel wss badly demolished.
Mr. Thomson and family are almost heart broken. They have lost two daughters in the past six weeks. August 2G their $ix year old daughter died with brain trouble. The funeral took place August 27 at the home and the remains were laid to rest in the Wesley cemetery by the side of her sister. The heart broken family has the sympathy of the community in this, their sad bereavement.
The Hickory Corner threshing club met^at John Merrell's Satdrday evening, August 27, and settled all their threshing with each other and then they enjoyed themselves by eating ice cream and cake and all kinds of fruit that John and his wife had prepared for them. They all had a nice time and went home hoping that they all would meet again next year.
WAYNETOWN.
School will begin Monday, the 12th. Two new barbers from Indianapolis have located here.
Miss Lena Simms is spending the week in Inidanapolis. Bud Runyan has bought a half interest in the beef shop
Rev. Hanson will preach at the Baptist church Sunday morning and evening.
Rev. Williams preached his farewell sermon at the M. E. church Sunday night.
Billy Quillen moves back to the farm next week and Alpha Merrill moves to town.
Ben Brown and wife returned home Tuesday from a two months' tour of the west.

James Dickson has entered into a partnership with A. L. Coons at the corner grocery.
Billy Armstrong has accepted a position as violinist with one of the Indianapolis orchestras.
Miss Blanche Clark, of Colfax, concluded a very pleasant visit of a week with Miss Blanche Ellis, Tuesday.
Harry Eller, the bookkeeper at the Waynetown bank, will be superceded next Monday by Vern Livengood.
Fred Kelly returued to his place of business, South Bend, Wednesday after a week's visit with home folks.
Bert Hill will return from his outing this week and resume his old place with Fonce Sumner, our tonsorial artist.
P. J. Lough and family ate a reunion dinner Wednesday on the banks of Sugar Creek with over one hundred relatives.

The Raccoon bridge near Jones' is in a dangerous condition. Mies Gertrude McCalhim. of Irvington, is the guest of Miss Ellia Ronk.
The Baptist association,east of Orth, attracted considerable attendance this week.
Apple & Trip, of Indianapolis, are here, sinking a tubular well for the Big Four.
Win. Walls, who waB overcome by the heat last week on the Big Four section, is improving.
W. P. Peterson, Joe Booher and others attended the funeral of B. F. Witt, of Anderson, formerly of this place, Sunday.
Last Tuesday, while attempting to start a balky horse in a largo woods four miles west of here, Wm. Walton was struck a vicious blow in the face by the animal. The 'upper maxilary was fractured and bis face otherwise bruised. Dr. King dressed the wounded man.
James Weaver and family were called to Muncie Saturday to attend the funeral of his nephew, Theodore Peters, who was killed at a show. The deceased was a frequent visitor here, his parents formerly living at Crawfordsville. An account of the accident will be found elsewhere in this paper.

While at the Wallace show in Crawfordsville Butler and Lovania Myers had several dollars takeu out of their pockets.
Last SuLday morning on going to the barn to feed, Ransom Myers lound his son's road horse missing, also his saddle and bridle. He saw by the tracks that he had gone eastward. He then telephoned to several surrounding towns but could not iind him and has not found him yet. I give a description of the horse, saddle and bridle below and a reward of S25 will ba given to the finder of the horse and thief: The horse is 15 hands and 1 inch in height, short and well fed, dark chestnut sorrel with one white hind foot, stripe of white in face, over five yea^s of age anew spring saddle aDd a new work bridle- Address all communications to W.
