W. W. Watson Saturday received a telegram from Medicine Lodge, Kansas, announcing the death of his sister, Mrs. Mary Garland, the widow of the late Luther Garland.
Last summer Mr. and Mrs. Watson visited the Garland family in Kansas and left them well and happy. The family was then composed of four people: Mr. and Mrs. Garland, and their two grown children, Will and Etlie. Shortly after Mr. and Mrs. Watson returned home. Mr. Garland fell from his horse aud was killed. In the winter Will went hunting and was accidentally shot and now Mrs. Garland has died, leaving only Miss Etlie of a family which six months ago was unbroken.
The Garlands were all raised in Montgomery county but several years ago went to Kansas to reside. Tneir friends here will be pained to learn of the further allliction which has come upon them.

AN AFFLICTED FAMILY. ANOTHER BURGLARY.
The Ki'sidi-m-e of Col. I. Klstou is IJimsacked ll.v Midnight Marauders.
Last Thursday night burglars effected an entrance to the east Wabash avenue residence of Col. I. C. Elston by crawling through a cellar window. The house was thoroughly overhauled, most of the family being absent from home, and things were generally turned topsyturvy. The bureau drawers were opened and examined and a number of sil7er spoons stacked up on the table and left. The spring overcoat of I. C. Elston, Jr., was carried as far as the window but was left there. The burglars were evidently in search of money only, and finding none, concluded to leave behind any valuables which might lead to their recovery.
AT M. CKAWFOKIi'S.
Burglars visited the residence of C. M. Crawford on west Wabash avenue last Thursday, went through the laundry and pantry, not being able to obtain access to the main part of the house. They carried off a quantity of milk, butter and bread, but nothing of value.
Looks Had For IS1 i.v
Last Friday about 9:30 o'clock Will Eltzroth discovered the presence of a burglar in George Keller's Market street meat shop and lost no time in apprising Officer Bannister of the fact. The place was surrounded and an effort made to capture the burglar in the shop, but he bolted through the screeu door and ran as far as the Motion tracks where he was captured by Bannister. The erring one was found to be Bob Ilays, the barber. He acknowledged his guilt and stated that he had been drinking and did not realize what he was about. He had entered the plac by climbing over the transom of the rear door and had secured about fifty cents in change from the cash drawer. He had endeavored to get into the safe and had broken the knob from the drawer but had not succeeded in accomplishing his purpose. He grew reckless in his work and struck matches and this is what led to the discovery of his presence in the shop. Previous to this bad break the young man had not been suspected of crime. It is not likely that he will have a preliminary as information will be filed in the circuit court.

31 elMicrson Post Attended lOpiseopal Service* at Mu*ie Slid!-A Patriotic: Sermon I*y the Kector.
Memorial Sunday was observed Sun day by Mcl'herson Post and the Woman's Relief Corps. The Post met at headquarters at 10 o'clock, formed in line and marched in a body to Music Hall, where seats in the central tier of the parquet had been reserved. The women of the Relief Corps occupied seats in tbe north tier, while the audi ence was seated in the south tier and in the dress circle. The services were held under the auspices of John's Epis copal church, of which ltev. Charles H. Schultz is the rector. After the usual services of the church the sermon was delivered by the rector, who chose as his text tlie words, "Render unto Ciosar the things that are Ctusar's aud unto God the things that are God's The divine origin of our country was the theme of the speaker, and the sermon throughout was Qne of patriotism and loyalty. He paid a flue tribute to the objects and aims of the Grand Army of the Republic, and feelingly referred to his father who fell at the battle of Bull Run in defense of the Stars and Stripes and the unity of the nation, aud who sleeps to-day in an unknown grave. The sermon was one of absorbing interest and there was but one expression among the comrades, and that of hearty approval and endorsement. At the conclusion cf the services the Post filed out of the hall and marched back to headquarters, where it was dismissed.
