COUNTERFEITERS CAPTURED.

Savarnnient Seerot Service People Think They Have Miule Good Catch.

NEW YORK, Jan. 2G.—Henry Barnard and his wife, Charlotte, were arrested yesterday at thoirhome in Forty-fourth street and committed to jail in default of $5,000, charged by United States secret service agents with counterfeiting silver coins. Secret Service Agent Bagg says that Barnard is an expert counterI feiter and that he has been passing his worthless coins in small shops on the west side for several weeks. His imitations of United States coins were so good, said Mr. Bagg, that Barnard had no scruples in passing the counterfeits in the same stores over and over again.

Bernard's home was searched and in it was found an extensive counterfeiting plant, consisting of antimony, tin, copper, plating apparatus, files and about $25 in bad eoins. Mrs. Barnurd was arrested, charged with being cognizant of her husband's criminal proceedings. The two children of the couple wore placed in charge of the Gerry society.

BURNED TO DEATH.

Convict bmtigglos Is'aptlm Into Ills Cell at Auburn, N. Y. AUBURN, N. Y., Jan. 25.—Warden Stout, of (lie prison here, gave out a statement to tho press yesterday of the burning to doath of a convict in the prison Saturday night. The unfortunate man was James AlcTiugo. Tho latter had smuggled naptha to his cell, ..which ho was using lor cooking purposes. About 5:30 p.m. an explosion occurred and the guards and waiters immediately went to the scene, but

McTaige was enveloped llames, and before assistance could be rendered he was so seriously burned that the efforts of the physicians summoned proved to be unavailing and ho died a tew hours later. McTaige's time would have expired in March next.

Chicago Stove Foundry Burned CHICAGO, Jan. 2o.—The Northwestern Stove Kepair company's factory, 225 to 237 West Twelfth street, was entirely destroyed by fire last night. The Northwestern Stove Repair company is owned by Robert L. and Ralph S. Greenlee. They place tho damage on the contents of their establishment at $300,000 and .on tho building at $125,000. It is thought that the loss is almost entirely ..covered by insurance.

BOWERSVILLE, O., .Ian. 25.—When Postotlice Inspector Edenian came here to inspect the postoifiee he found a mixed state ot attains. Postmaster Lucien Wilson, who is also a merchant and dealer, was short in Jus accounts $Ub5. Tin: missing tunds had been taken trom the uioney-unler money, and Wilson had but $10*01 to show for the amount. Wilson admits lie used the money, Bad bookkeeping is blamed.

American Hsirk Damaged.

LONDON, Jan. 25.—The American bark Hayden Brown, Captain Claxton, which lett Trapani on Dee. for Gloucester, Mass., has arrived at Gibraltar with her sails and rigeing damaged and her cargo slightly shifted. The

British bark John O'Gaunt lias been burned and sunk at Tocopilla. Tho captain perished but all the others on board were saved.

IMuj-ctl Willi it Dyimmitu Curlildgo. UAKLYM-:, Ills., Jan. 25.—While Everett Sharp, aged 11, was handling a dynamite cartridge Saturday night in a room of his home it exploded. The boy lost two lingers and both thumbs, and was also injured about the head. His grandmother, who was near, narrowly escaped death. Young Sharp is seriously hurt.

Konmutic Miirriago.

MILKORD CICNTKK, O., Jan. 25.—Miss Martha Metealf, aged ?ll, and Henry A. Barbour, aged bO, were married Saturday. They were lovers in Germany (50 years ago, when Miss Metealf came to this country. Barbour came to the United States two mouths ago, after having accumulated a little fortune, and the twain were married.

Handed by a Colored Mob.

TALLAUASSE, Fla.# .HILL- !25.—Picrcu Taylor, a young negro who attempted an assault upon Miss Emma Apthorp last night a week, was taken from the jail yesterday by a mob and hanged to a tree in the yard. SAMJOSKY, O., Jan. 25.—Saturday a lire here destroyed six business houses in about two hours. The buildings were completely gutted, entailing a loss of $100,000. Considerable damage was done to adjacent stores by water. The hre is supposed to have been of incendiary origin.

Editor'* Wife Dead.

Kxoxviu.rc, Tenn., Jan. 25.—Mrs. J. B. Pound, wite ot the publisher of the Knoxville Tribune, Knoxville Sentinel and Chattanooga News, died suddenly here yesterday. Mrs. Pound was a native of Georgia and her remains will be shipped to Macon for interment.

DAYTON, O., Jan. 25.—Judtre Brown last Saturday overruled the motion for a new trial of Albert J. Frauz, convicted ol the murder of Bessie Little, his sweetheart, and sentenced Franz to be electrocuted at Columbus on May 13 next belore 6 a. m.

With a Itullct In His Head. WARSAW, Ills., Jan. 25. Marion Karus, a tarmer of tins vicinity, aged 25, was found in the carnage house on his mother's farm with a bullet in lus head and a pistol by his side. While shrouded in mystery the shooting is believed to have been accidental.

National Association of Manufacturer*. CINCINNATI, O., Jan. 25.—Vice President Esau and other delegates trom the Ohio valley to the convention ot the National Association of Manufacturers at Philadelphia this week, left today on a special Pennsylvania tram composed entirely ot Pullman cars.

HI* Son Dies of Pnnmuonla and His House linrns Shortly Afterward. GRKENCASTLE, Iud., Jan. 25.—A. J. Buark, better known as "Duck," a prominent farmer of this community, lost his residence, east of the city, Saturday, by lire. Two hours before the fire Ira Ruark, youngest son of the farmer, died of pneumonia, the corpse being about all that was saved from the flames. Kuark's residence was insured for $500 in a local company, but the premium on his policy was allowed to lapse and the policy will be lost.

Swindled a Bank.

VINCKN'XISS, Ind., Jan. 25.—Saturday a man called at the Adams Express office at Bruceville this county, and wanted to draw $400 on J. H. Clinker, of Birds, Ills., through the First National bank ol this CJty. A message was sent to the bank for the money but before the lank sent to tjie J3rucevillo man they wired J. H. Clinker of Birds, Ills., asking if it wojjld be all right. The Birds man roplied that it w&s and the bank peoplo forwarded tho $400 by Adams express to the Brnceville man. It has since developed that the Birds, Ills., man was a confederate of tho Bruceville man and they had duped tho bank.

Dormitory Iturned.

VALPARAISO, Iud., Jan. 25.—Vineyard Hall, one of tho largest and best dormitories on College Hill, burned to tho ground Saturday. The dormitory contained GO rooms, all occupied by students of the Northern Indiana Normal School. Several of the inmates had narrow escapes, being suffocated with smoke and being carried from the burning building. Tho students lost, all their property valued at $4,000. The loss on building and contents was about $14,000, with insurance of $S,-100.

Attempted Train Wrecking. EVANSVILU:, Ind., Jan 25.—Liist night George, Lyman and Chatrick Allen, three brothers, aged 10, 14 and 11, respectively, were arrested for attempted tram wreckiug. They piled crosstios on the Peoria, Decatur and Evansville railway, and hijd it not been they were discovered by workmen the train would undoubtedly have been wrecked. The obstructions were placed near a bridge. The prisoners said they wanted to see tho train knock the ties off the track.

Denied His Guilt.

Four WAYNK, Iud., Jan. 25.—Saturday Judge O'Rourko sentenced Claude Smith, the murder of George Freeh, to lifo imprisonment. Smith, when asked if he had .-inything to sav why sentence for life should not be pronounced, replied: "Yes, sir, I have I am not guilty and do not think the verdict is right." Smith was taken to Michigan City today.

Henry orreries.

KOKO.MO. Ind., Jan. 25.—Tim details of Henry bhrock's forgeries continue to come to light, though nothing has been hoard of the missing stockman since he decamped. More than a dozen new notes turned up in the last day or two, all of them forgeries. The total forged indebtedness will reach $8,000. Shrock is supposed to be in Oklahoma, where he has relatives.

Kode a Horae luto Church. SKKWKNT, Ky., .Tan. 25.—At Wlntesburg, Saturday, John Craft, of Rockliouse Creek, was lined $80 and given 10 days' imprisonment for ridiug a horse into a Baptist church, last week, while meeting was in progress.

Will Lov. ry. aged 18, who was killed in Altatnent, Md., by a train, was brought to his home in Manslleld, Intl., aud was buried yesterday.

William Gavuor of Underwood, Ind., has plead not guilty to the murder of William E. Counts at Reelsville on Dec. 1 Gaynor has been held without bail. "Jeannette," the oldest, elephant, in the couutry, died at Wallace's circus quarters in Peru. Ind., Saturday. She was the only female African elephant in captivity.

The large fruit jar glass works of Ball Brothers, in Muncie, were on tire Saturday, but the apparatus at hand IU the factory prevented the ilauies from spreading and the damage was small.

Gee Grimes, a Terre Haute horseman, has been indicted by the grand jury for selling a hurse on wluch ho had uiven a mortgage without notifying the purchaser ot the encumbrance.

Thieves stole a team and sled atCiltnan, Ind., drove up to the back door of a general store and were loading up the sled with goods when discovered. They eut the horses loose and escaped with them.

COUNCIL BLUITS, la., Jan. 25.—A lire yesterday partially destroyed the boys' donninatorv of the Christian Homo Orphanage.

One hundred boys were sleeping in the building when the lire broke otit. All were rescued. Chief Templeton is badly frozen and Capt. Auley and Driver Jones are also laid oft by reason of irosting their extremities while attending the fire. Damage to the building $3,000, with no insurance.

Girl Pupil .swallow* a I'm In Order to Get One.

HAMILTON, O., Jan. 25.—Viola Willie, a 10-year-old pupil in tne public schools, swallowed a pm in her classroom. She had snapped her lingers and asked the teacher lor a drink of water, but was refused. To her side desk schoolmate she saiti: "I'll make teacher give me a drink." Then she swallowed a big black pin, and a fit of coughing ensued. Finally, after copious draughts ot water, the pm lodged in tlie stomach. Tho doctors think it will cause trouDle.

Young, a widow, has filed suit for $10,000 against Jack Seanlon aud Charles Howe, railroad 111011, who, sue alleges, on the night of December 28. entered her home and assaulted her, beat and bruised her 111 a manner which brought on severe illness and caused ner to nearly lose her sight.
