Reviewing the Peltit Murder Cage. Lafayette Call: After having been decided by both the lower and the Supreme Courts that the claim is unjust, the board of commissioners of Montgomery county have again presented the Tippecanoe county board the bill for 82,000, fees paid Geo. P. Haywood and Albert B. Anderson for legal services in the Pottit murder case. To the original bill S-4S0 interest is added. Just how they are to collect this claim after the Supreme Court has decided it unjust is more than the commissioners can at present understand.
CLOSE COM UN ION.
All the l-.iltie TadicorH at the l'nblic SelioolB tarry Their Individual Iirlnk"ii: inn Cups Now.
The measlcy, skulking microbe, which on death and evil bent, lurks in all sorts of place, including the pouting lips of pretty maidens, is in a bad row of stumps at the Crawfordsville public schools. Heretofore this frowsy distributor of disease has had a regular picnic in the schools and hundreds of thousands of hiin have pranced gaily about the water buckets and the public tin cups which adorned a corner of each room wherein young ideas are taught to shoot paper wads with unerring accuracy, acquiring at the same time proficiency in the three "rV and moulding in mud. Now, however, his power for harm has been greatly circumvented if not entirely eliminated by the sanitary regulations in force. To be sure the goodly work of batting all particularly large and impudent microbes over the head with rulers goes on as of yore, but this method while eflicacious has never proved a preventive. The present plan is a prize beaut, and entitles the originator thereof to a particularly large and lustrous amaranthine wreath.
The casual observer standing on the street corner as the happy and rosy cheeked little children troop by to school has doubtless observed depending from the neck of each tadger, by a string or rope, a tin cup. Each child who desires to get a drink at school must carry his or her own cup. Many of them also have bottles of carbolic acid and sponges, it is said, and after drinking, the cups are thoroughly disinfected. The public cup has been relegated to the oblivion it has long merited and the health and welfare of the children is assured by a charmingly sanitary system of close communion. All this is well and good. In the light of the latter day science and investigation it is a wonder how those of us who went to school under the old regime pulled through alive. We probably wouldn't if we had known what is known to-day. We would just have curled up and died along about the sixth year grade.
Hon. J. A. Mount us a Campaigner. Lafayette Call: Col. P.nd Mrs. C. G. Thomson returned last evening from a two days' visit with the Hon. J. A. Mount and family jt. their country home, near ShannonJale, Montgomery county. Mi. l.jcn'it ca.ite home on Sunday inn. .inji and remained there over Mond, He has scarcely had a day of leisure c'.rn-.o the campaign opened, having spoken from six to ten times a week. Lie expects to have visited every county in the State before November 3 In many counties he has already had two cr three appointments. The State Central Committee keeps him going constantly, and he cannot nearly meet the demand for him in every part of the State. Mr. Mount's audiences are always large and enthusiastic. His arguments for protection and sound money are especially convincing to laboring men and farmers, and the outlook is growing brighter every day.
