Chapter i2:.' of the acts of ls'.il, patie 332, is an act authorizing the borrosvinu, if found necessary, to meet, the appropriation made by the last session, the sum of SI, 100,000.

Why is it that the claim of William F. Gansbert for si,boi.ro should be provided for twice'? Why should it cost S41,000.00 per annum to care for the State House? Why should SI 1,000.00 bo appropriated and paid assistant custodian, .janitors, sweepers and watchmen at the State House'.' in the foregoing list.

TIN' OI LLI'RIPRM'ITY. For a loti^ time it has been apparent that in sume way trade and commerce between the South American States and the l'nited States shmtld lie increased. Europe had a monopoly of this trade, and the question arose, how could the United States get all or a fair share of it? As usual, the Republican partv not only saw the difficulty found the remedy in the laws passed by a Republican Congress, authorizing treaties providing for reciprocal trade relations with South' American States. Jii.o these laws treaties have been made and entered into with P.razil, Cuba, Porto Rico, Santo Dotnintro, I'.ritisli West Indies, Salvador, I'.ritisli Guiana, and Guatemala, and although a begining lias just been made, the results show an increase after only one year, or a little more, of about .•?i0,t)0u,o()0. The

Democratic party, true to its traditions and practice of opposing all great measures, opposed Reciprocity, declared it was a sham, and that no good would come from it, using the same arguments that it used against ievying a tax on steel rails, tin-plate, and other products man ufactured in this country, a:id agains all th(! great measures which ha"" resulted in increa manufactures, and an Increase, in trade and commerce.

i»l r:

tion. oi' iiviiiu' nufactuivd deereased.

The list of articles admitted free of duty or lax has teen increased until more Roods nre admitted free of ::y than those on which a tax is Kxvurts have increased. Imports of merchandise I have decreased. The balance of iradoj is in our favor ly more than -^.'DO.oOO,000. Kxpurtsof farm products have it,creased and iintmrts of the sanic from other countries have decreased. Trade with South American countries is rapidly sirowins- Farm products are in be.t'er detnand and briny blither prices. The price of agricultural the States of the \Y from S." to sio per acre. More of the necessaries of life can be purchased for less lr.cney than ever before in the history of the country. Better let well enough alone, and keep this prosperity Roinu, rather than experiment in some new direction.

Poor Iri'liiiKl.

The Trisb World says that when the English I'niou Act deprived Irish manufactures of the protection umler which they had grown and prospered, then" was only one. Irish industry that was protected. That was airrietilt lire. When Irish manufactures disappeared, in consequence cf iOngiish competition, there was nothing left for the Irish people to do but till the laud for a living. KtiRlaml was ilia great niarKct for 'he products of Irish farms, ar.d that was a protected market for ninny years after Ireland had witnessed the destruction of her manufactures.

That is just what (!reat lirii&in wants to drive us to under free trade. Compel all our people to go to farming, and give them the markets for the manufacturing without competition. And the Democratic partv seems to be helping Groat Britain all it can to put tlii.the same condition Ireland is in

Birthday Anniversary.

The 84th birthday of the venerable David Meharry, of Shawnee Mound, was celebrated on the Kith by a gremul company of 27 of his immediate relatives and friends, who called in and 6pent a very pleasant day at liis home. He seemed* hopeful of a much longer ife and to all appearances will vet live in any vears to do pood and enjoy life He said: "Tl,e Jiible is the book of all books it fits ovorv case and condition and a Irnasure to me." He bears malice (ovarii none and has charity for all. He has lived at Shawnee Mound since He has been faithful, true and tried and will be greatly missed by the church and community when he is called home to hislinnl reward. Among others present were: Frank Acheson and wife. S. A. E. Heach ard wife, Geo. Hawthorn and wife, G. N. Meharry and wife. The Meharry's have been very inllnential families in this vicinity since as early as There were 6even brothers and one sister, Mary Beach, all I of whom, except two, David and liev I

$tlO lictrard,

The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages and that isCatarrh. Hall'sCatarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, it requires a constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting dircctl.v upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers, that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that tlie.v cannot cure. Send for list of Testimonials.

England Levies Hig-host Duties in the Worhl. England collects frotn tariff dutie9 8100,000,000 annually, and levies the highest duties of any country in the world. The actual rate Imposed and collceted in 1800 on manufactured tobacco was 422 per cent. S'ippose the Republican tariff of 1800 had imposed any such duty, or one-fourth as high, whatwculd Watterson, Cleveland, Henry George, and other Democratic free-traders say?

And yet the British press are demanding that Mr. Cleveland shall be elected, and that our protective tarifT be repealed. Let us maintain our own policy, and not adopt one to suit Great Rritiai..

I»«y Up.

The second enstallment of taxes must be paid before the first Monday in November, In about three week's now, or tho penalty aud interest will go on. The Democratic State Treasurer wants tho heavily incroased State tax. lie can loan it and make thousands of dollars for himself out of it.
