Fit'vieir Saturday viciously at
tacked the Democratic board of township trustees. Behold how good it is for brothers to dwell together in liar.mony.
ANOTHEH negro was burned at the Btake by tho Democrats of Arkansas Saturday. This is a popular amusement there taking the place of lawn tennis and base ball.
IT was to the credit of Cleveland that he declined to preside at the big Tammany mass meeting last fall but he probably now feels like kicking himself because he did not consent.
THE sentiment of the country is rapidly cryt-talizing into the belief that Harrison and Hill will be pitted against each in tho Presidential contest now approaching. A juicy dish of crow is in store for hosts of Democrats.
THE llev. Dr. ParkLmrst describes the Tammany rulers of New York as "a lying, perjured, rum-soaked and libidinous lot but they control the Democratic party of the United States, nevertheless.
ALL great, successful, and progressive ideas bearing on the public life and policy of the nation, within the last thirty years, have been originated by Republicans. Reciprocity is a great, successful, and progressive idea.
READ HANNA has announced himself af a candidate for the oilice of prosecuting attorney, subject to the Democratic nominating convention. There is war in the camp and Sheriff Bible will also find a rival Richmond in the field it is said.
CONCKESSMAN HAHTKK, a Democrat from Ohio, says that tho passage of a free coinage bill by the House will elect Harrison for a second term. Mr. Harter is dead right. Republicans iBhould pray for strength to Mr. Bland of Missouri.
THE liill Democrats of the Eighth district are making a great fight against the re-nomination of that great and good man. Yory Brookshire. If tho convention at Terre Haute Saturday is anv criterion from which to Judge, Yory is a gone goose.
li-' Reciprocity could be made to fail or to result in harm to the country Democratic joy would overtlow. Since, however, it is proving triumphant and
iB
winning great advantages for American industry its Democratic enemies are being forced to drink a bitter cup.
IF
a Democratic House, with a majority of two-thirds, can run two months at an expense of over 8700,000 without doing anything, or even getting as far as the adoption of rules, how much can it expend and how little can it accomplish in the course of two years?
ONE of the neatest cartoons of the season recently appeared in the New York Press. It represented Hill with a Kodak pointing it at the massive figure of Cleveland and beneath the picture the following words were attributed to the former: "Ah, there, Grover! I press the button and you take another four years' rest."
INDIANAPOLIS has just made a contract to have Beven hundred electric lights furnished at the rate of 880 per light, and the newspapers there are congratulating the city that she got off so cheap. At the same time they regret that the legal limitation of their municipal debt
prevents them buying a plant of their own. Crawfordsville still leads the procession for light. |J
$88,000/000 FOK THE FARMERS. In the month of December, 1891, the farmers of this country exported barley to the value of §357,288, as againist the value of $28,218 in December, 1890: they exported corn to the value of 83,309,837, as against the value of 8961,738 they exported oats to the value 81,178,5-19, as agianst the value of 816,980: they exported oat meal to the value of 836,266, as against the value of 87,660 they exported rye to the value of 8906,824, as against the value of 822,250 they exported wheat to tho value of 816,686,301, as against the value of 84,155,228 they exported wheat fiour to the value of 87,620,737, as against the value of 84,853,747. Th ir total sales of breadstulTs in December, 1891, amounted to $30,241,893, as against 810,126,736 and taking the whole calendar year of 1891, their sales of breadstutTs amounted to $224,318,500,against 8136,849,896 in 1890. This enormous addition to the earnings of the farmers, amounting to $88,000,000, was accomplished under the operation of a tariff which they were told by Democratic free traders would bring about their utter ruin. "It has been accomplished under the policies of a party which the Farmers' Alliance has painted to them as wholly inimical to their interests. It may bo assumed that with these 888,000,000 in their pockets they will now listen to free treders and alliance lecturers with a degree of amusement only equaled by their contempt.
PLAYING the role of tho "artful dodger" is nothing new to Democratic leaders, and whatever may be the end of the farce-comedy in which they are now engaged, tho audience which includes the entire country, will get lots of amusement out of it. Tho programme as arranged by stage manager Crisp was to Jiave the committee on Coinage and that on Ways and Means have a pretended struggle for the right-of-way in the House for their bills—free coinage and the tariff—which was to be kept up long enough to make it certain that the free coinage bill would be thrown over to the next session, thus allowing the Democrats to ask the votes of the free coinage men because of their intention to pass the bill, and the votes of the anti-silver men because of their intention to defeat it.
THE plain people are against a second term of the presidency.—Frankfort Ore.seen t.
Of the seven Piosidents who have been re-elected four were Democrats, one was a Federalist, and two were Republicans. The four Democrats were Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and Jackson. The Crescent worships at the shrine of Jefferson, who was re-elected by the plain people. While tho above may have been intended as a threat at Harrison its deeper moaning was a stab for Cleveland.
W. E. HUMVHHEY, of Crawfordsville, is mentioned as a probable candidate for Congress in the Eighth district. He is a young man, thoroughly posted in politics, and through the last two campaigno, on the stump, did very efficient work. He established a reputation throughout the State as an orator of unusual ability.—Indianapolis Journal.
Should Mr. Humphrey bo so fortunate as to receive the nomination he will be hoard from. He is a young man of ability and in oratory stands at the head of the list.
THE account of tho 1'eterman divorce case is not exactly first-class reading matter, but it may serve as a warning, both to those who are contemplating hasty, ill-sorted marriages, and to those who are contemplating divorce. It also serves to show how our shortcomings may stand against us in judgment should wo ever figure in a law suit of any kind. The moral is to always behave and never go to law.
ONE of the Tammany bosses was quoted in the Cincinnati Enquirer Sunday, as saying that "the claimant" had always been a heavier load than the Democratic party in New York can carry, adding that in 1884, they had to pull him through by counting ten thousand of Ben Butler's votes for him. The harmony that exists between the factions in Now York is beautiful to behold.
THE robber tariff has got to go. It is a plant of class interests and directly opposite to the American idea.—Frankfort Crescent.
1
It is a plant that was watered and nurtured by Jefferson, the patron saint of the Crescent. Not a syllable in all of Jefferson's writings can be produced which embraced such sentiments as the above.

Had wrought for others soothed tho hurt of tears. Rooked childre_'s cradles, ceased tho fever's sum::, Dropped balm of love in many an aching heart. Now, stirless folded, like wan roso loaves pressed. Above the snow and silence of her breast: In mute appeal they told of labors douo. And well earned rest that came at set of sun.
From the worn brow tho lines of care had swept. As if an angel's kiss, the while she slept, Iiad smoothed the cobweb wrinkles quite away. And given back the peaco of childhood's day. And on the lips the faint smile almost said: "None knows life's secret but the happy dead." So Razing where Bhe lay we knew that pain And parting could not cleave her soul again.
And we were sure that those who saw her last In that dim vista which we call tho past. Who never knew her old and laid aside, Remembering best tho maiden and tho bride. Had sprung to greet her with tho olden speech, Tho dear sweet names no later lore can teach And welcome home they cried, and grasped her hands: So dwcLeth the mother in tlio best of lands, —Indianapolis News.
A SICKENING SUICIDE,
Perry Beck, a Prosperous Young Parmer of Near New Eoss, Meets a Horrible Death. Special lo the Journal.
NEW Ross, Feb. 23.—The whole community was inexpressibly shocked last night when word reached the town that Perry Beck, one of the most prosperous and well known young farmers in this community had committed suicide at his home, three miles northeast, at three o'clock in the afternoon. Tho terrible deed was evidently planned with great coolness and deliberation and left no doubt but that Beck intended to end his existence instantly. Tho family of the suicide were away from home at the time ho took his life and their absence resulted in the fearful mutilation of tho body. Beck retiring to a room and closing tho house tied a short stick to the trigger of a shot gun loaded with a leaden ball. Placing tho muzzle against his heart and bearing upon the gun ho pressed upon the stick with his foot discharging the piece and blowing a hole entirely through his body. A pasting neighbor heard the muflled report of the gun and thinking that something was wrong forced an entrance to the house and burst into the room of death where a most horrible and sickening spectacle was presented. As tho door (lew open a cloud of smoke and the awful stench of burning flesh poured out well nigh overpowering the one entering. The wadding of the gun's load had ignited tho clothing of the wretched suicide and they were burning off of him curling and cooking the ilesh of his body in a most revolting manner. When the horror struck neighbor burst in the clothing had all burned from tho body excepting the legs of the pantaloons and they were burning tho tlesh beneath them crackling and sputtering in tho flames. Water was quickly so cured and thrown upon the charred and blackened stump which lay upon the lloor and the total cremation of the body thus prevented. Tho startled neighborhood was soon upon the ground and the awful mass of burned llesh was cared for as well as possible. The deceased was 27 years old and leaves a wife and two children. Tho only cause which can be ascribed for the rash deed is mental aberration. He had been in only fair health and his friends noticed that he was subject to attacks of melancholy. His affairs were very prosperous and his domestic relations were exceptionally pleasant. The family of the unfortunate man have the sympathy of the entire community.
THE STONE PILE RESUEREG1ED
The Council Decrees That it Shall Tower an Awful Warning to Tramps and Bummers.
Tho ciLv council met last la nd held a session which was attended with about as much spirit and interest as marks the meetings of the congressional committee on the revision of laws. Cigar smoke roso in streaming clouds and lloated off in the silence which waB broken only seini-occasionallv by a motion of indescribable dullness. It was resolved to order at the expense of the property holders a twenty-lour inch brick sewer through tho allev south of Main between Washington and Green streets. A declaratory resolution to this ffect was passed.
The committee on the widening of south Green street was granted more time to make its report, as was tho committee on the extension of Hocum, Oak and Garfield streets.
C. N. Holden was allowed tho privelege of fitting up tho alloy south of Jefferson between Plum and John streets to suit himself. Some accounts were allowed and some trivial jobs let.
Then indeed was transacted the great business of the evening which reflects credit, glory and renown upon the name and fame of the city council. It was moved and unanimously passed, VEB, passed with a howl, that the stone pile be resurrected for the accommodation of drunken thugs and troublesome tramps who sojourn in our midst. The clerk was instructed to order three car loads of stone at once, and it will be placed under the sheds at the electric lights works. Hereafter all tramps entering town :nd people who are sent to jail will be obliged to work out the'r fines on the stone pile, unless^tlie cash is paid.
