FKEE traders take pleasure in alleging that our protective tariff injures our foreign trade. Statistics show the contrary. However, the freo trader is not convinced by figures. Last year our imports amounted in value to §828,312,646, and our exports to §970,506,282, This is high water-mark.

ENULAMJ built up her immense linplate interests by means of a high protective tariff enacted in 1887 and maintained until recently. Having once established this great industry of course the dear Britishers object to having Uncle Sam follow suit, but, by tho great McKinley, we will do it anyway.

IN 1890, during the month of November, the exports of lead and manufactures of lead from the United States amounted in value to §50,060. In 1891, under Republican protection, during the same month, our exports of such articles amounted in value to §133,877. This increase of §83,817, or 167.6 per cent, was due to Republican protection-

few years ago quit voting tho Democratic ticket ind became a Republican. He was continually asked why he left the Democratic party but he always replied that he had not done so, for the fact was that the Democratic party had left him. He had always favored a protective tariff on wool, but when the1 famous Mills bill put wool on the free list he became a Republican, not by any change of opinion on his part, but because of a change in the policy of his party. The McKinley law protects wool and now the first attack on law by the Democrats is a bill putting

THE religious sentiment of Crawfords villo is being crystallized in opposition to the opening of the World's Fair on Sunday. Good people are divided on this subject and it is one of the most vexing questions connected with this great enterprise. To keep the Fair closed on Sunday would be a grand object lesson to the world in Sunday observance but it has practical drawbacks which have to be seriously considered, as Elizabeth Cady Stanton says in the North American Review. In this magazine the lady says she is op posed to Sunday closing and gives her reasons, based on experience at the Centennial.

12 was the 83d anniversary

of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, having been born February 12, 1809. He wap one of the rarest and grandest products of American civilization. His growth and early manhood were no circumstanced as to develop his masterful energy in agreement with his political ambition. He was the leader whose administration subdued a rebellion of eight millions of people, the emancipator whose pen struck the shackles from the limbs of four millions of slaves, and the ruler who assisted to demonstrate the fact that this is a government "of the people, by the people and for the people."

THE kicker against improvements in our city is nearly always actuated by selfish motives. He thinks not of the general good but only of his individual welfare. Where kickers are in the jority you will find a dead, dull, town. Where they are boldly o\ ridden by a majority of pro^essive men you will find a clean, beautiful and lively city. Down with the kicker. Long live the hustler and may his tribe increase,

vertised man in the Democratic party. But this is one of those rare instances where advertising is of doubtful value, for while he is defeating his enemy, Cleveland, he is at the same time nailing the lid down on tho coflin of his presidential aspirations. The Democratic party will very likely be forced to nominate some renegade Republican like Gray, Palmer or Boies.

THE wickedness of the Democratic gerrymander in Indianapolis is best shown in the statement that the Republicans are repiesented in Congress with two representatives and the Democrats with eleven representatives and two senators while both parties practically cast the same number of votes.

Indiana state board of agriculture Ihursday, in deference to a demand from all parts of the state, purged itself of the bribery scandal which has been hanging over it in connection with the purchase of a new state fair site. In answer to a resolution passed by the board R. M. Lockhart, of De Kalb county, who was offered the bribe, made a clean breast of the whole business. He submitted statements, the substance of which is as follows: "On January I was in the waBhroom of the Dennison hotel. One other man was there and he began to converse with mo in a general way about the fair grounds. He was a stranger to me, and as I left the room he asked for a private conversation with me. We went to my room in the hotel. He wanted our talk kept quiet, but I made no promises. Before he haj reached the main topic I went to dinner. I to,d Banks and Sankey about the man and they advised me to go on. "We had an appointment for after dinner and met again in my room. He said he would HJce to see the Miller farm selected. By his manner in the morning conversation I knew something was wrong. I asked him what tnere would be in it for me if that site was chosen. lie answered: "There is

"L a+ner raises while rabbits and sell! them, and during the summer he mads frequent visits to the cornfield of William Poole, where he pulled the growing- corn and carried it away, to be fed to his rabbits. The grand jury indictcd him for grand larceny and the case came up Wednesday. To the surprise of the prosecuting witness the court held that Lintnet had not been guilty of larceny in carrying away the corn, but of simple trespass. The court ruled that if the corn had been gathered and then taken away would have been larceny, but, being still in the stalk and the stalk growing in the ground, it is a partol the realty and could not be stolen. Lintner was then fined five dollars for trespass, and was very glad to get oil' with so light a penalty.

Indiana I.iucoln I.eagun. niA.\\i'oi.is, Ind., Feb. 1".— Ilie representatives of the Lincoln Lc clubs of the state, an organization that was formed in 18S3 and has become an important factor in republican politics in Iudirna, met here Friday. President Taylor called the meeting to order and delivered his annual address, saying that the National Lincoln league exists in thirty-five states and that this year 30,000 clubs will be in service before the close of the November elections. Resolutions were adopted reaffirming the faith of the league in the principles of the republican party, indorsing the protective tariff' policy, de- I claring in favor of honest money, composed of gold, silver anil paper, uaging the restricting of immigration where it is hurtful to labor, indorsing reciprocity anil indorsing the acts of the Fiftyfirst congress. President. Harrison's administration was indorsed as wise and statesmanlike and in strict conformity with the principles of the party.

The following officers were elected: President, W. L. Taylor. Indianapolis secretary, 11. K. .Mansfield. Muncie treasurer, W. II. McClellan, Danville. A league manager was appointed for each congressional district and two delegates from each district were appointed to the national convention of lei'gue clubs.

There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of tho mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, aud unless the inllammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
