SURPRISED BY THE LADIES.

Montgomery Lodge I. 0. 0. F. Tho Victim of a "torm Party. On Feb. Montgomery Lodge, No. 38, I. O. (). met to do some degree work. There was a large number present and everybody prepared to make the initiates sweat, blood and perform other little feats of a similar character, which are course, incident, to everv well regulated lodge. Hut while these preparations were going 011 so merrily, other preparations of an entirely different character were in progress across tho street in the county Recorder's •tlice. Here were assembling tho'.vivos, sisters and sweethearts of the members of the lodge, and each lady came bearing a bunion of tho good things of this ife. Delicious viands of all kinds were piled mountain high upon tho tables and counters in the office, and at eight o'clock the array of ladies and delicacies made an array at once formidable irroistablo and boautous to behold. About, iair past oipht just as the degree work was beginning, the guard at the outer door of tho lodge was startled by hearing a sharp double knock which awoke tho echoes of tho large lm lding and caused his teeth to chatter most unpleasantly. Whilo I10 hesitated the knocks came louder than before. Cautiously he unbarred tho door and pooped out into tho dark and gloomy hallway. Then with a shriek I10 rushed back into the lodge room and eryed in terror-zed accents that "the lady house had fallen down." No need to toll it, for they were following hard upon his heels and before tho astounded gentlemen could catch their breath thov were •held by the enemy," But a most pleasant, accommodating and liberal enemy it proved. They were royally treated as prisoners of war, and in less time than it takes to tell it, tho surprised camp had been transformed to a banquet room where everything the heart and appetite could wish was near at hand. Pleasantly passed the time away and it was nearing the hour of eleven when tho merry company broke up, and all departed hoping that surprises may in future bo a regular feature of degreo work. The Odd Fellows are blessed in their ladies ap the event of last ovening so forcibly and acceptably demonstrated.

Her husband, .lames Tripp, a reporter of more than local renown, incompletely in her power. So powerful ia tho lnlluenco she exerts over him that for the past two weeks he has been in a sort, of trance. Dressed only 111 an expensive nightrobe, Mrs. Tripp sat upon a double bed, her back against tho wall. Across her knees rested a small table, upon which from time to time she wrote with a "planchette. Beside the bed, in a chair, sat, her husband, his head thrown back am his hands clutching a cane which lay in his lap. His eyes wore closed and his face ghostly. Mrs. Tripp talked of ghosts and wrote "spirit" messages

Dowd and MoDormott, with two reporters repaired to the house at, clock yesterday afternoon and wore there several hours. At tho outset they went upstairs to tho room of tho Tripp' and demanded admittance. A rap on tho door received this response from Mrs. Tripp: "Go away! But before going bring me a collinful of coffee.

Assistant McPormott crawled out of a window on tho roof on an extension and peered through a window into tho Tripps' apartment. He witnessed the extraordinary scene described above.

A council of war was held, and it was determined to break into the room. Tho cook put her brawny shoulders to the panel and shoved until tho door opened.

Tho marshal went through tho form of serving his papers and notified Mrs. Tripp to bo in court at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Ho could do no more, and after all hands had become surfeited with Mrs. Tripp's ravings, it was decided to wait until to-day before ceeding with the ejectment.

Rough on the Protective Union. Judge Everett to-day, at .Lafayotte, gave his decision in the case of Hughes against tho Wabash Valley 'Protective Union. It was a decisive victory for tno plaintiff, he being agarded damages in full with interest. The case was somewhat alter this manner. Several years ago Hughes .Tames and wife, of Warren county, took out a joint policy in the Union for .$8,000. In July 'DO, Mrs. James died and in the following March James was called to Crawfordsville and paid $(i()0 as his claim in full. He was told that all the members had been notified and that onlj enough had responded to make $581. He protested and filed suit, for the $2,400 still due him. The case went to Tippecanoe county and Judge Everett was exceedingly rough on tho Union in his decision. He stated that lit* found that its ollieers had collected $2,800 on the •lames policy and moreover had a mortuary I und of $15,000 at the time. Just what the decision will result in is not yet known. James Wright, who appeared for the plaintiff, and George Hurley, who represented the Union, re turned home to-day. The Union at I sent is "out of sight."

The Gooclbar Will On,so.

About 100 citizens of Clark town ship arrived on Monday to appear as witnesses in the ease of Dickerson Goodbar et al. vs. Jacob E. Lidikay, administrator of tho estate of J. N. Goodbar, deceased. Ballard Brothers, Proctoi and James McCabe, of Williamsport appear for tho plaintiffs and Kennedy Kennedy and Anderson & Crane for the defendants. Tho case will last several days and promises some sensational developments. It is a family fight from away back and bad blood is exceedingly plentiful. Before a jury was relected a number of called talesmen were rejected and the jury when accepted were composed of Milton MoKee, Thomas LaFolletto, \V. L. Fraley, J. B. Stingley, Biaine A. Archie, J.

A Peculiar Accident.

There is a wailing among tho children of miller J. "W. Mclveen over the loss of a large and valuable pet dog. Tho dog met his fate in the performance of his duty and in a strange and tragic way He was in tho furnace room of the mill on west Market street when a large rat started across the floor. With an excited yelp the dog leaped after it and the rat in wild terror rushed squarely through the furnace door. Tho dog blinked by excitement and eagerness went after it right into the seething flames. The per sons in the room heard au agonized howl and that was all. Impelled by his momentum the poor animal had rushed to the center of the fire, when,of course, ho died almost instantly.
