Bok In His Literary Gossip Gives Some Interesting Figures on Ben Jlur. Bok in his literary gossip in the Sunday Journal describes tho literary life of Gen. Wallace to some extent ai.d comments on the General's forthcoming novel. The following in regard to the success of "Ben-Hur" is interesting and will be news to many: "Speaking of "Ben-Hur," I am perfectly 6afe in saying,I think, that DO author during the past ten years has made more money out of the sales of a single book than has Lew Wallace received as .his share from the famous Oriental tale. Some say that 'President Garfield's indorsement of the book gave it a new lease of life, while others claim it took the public a year to find out the real worth of the story. Be that as it may, the an to el l, first in moderate quantities, then orders came for hundreds, and soon the publishers scarcely took the plates of the book off tho press. Ever since that time, for seven years, the book has kept selling steadily, and there is every indication that, with the two new editions in the market, the book will reach around half million by the close

that Lew Wallace has made considerably over 8100,000 from this single book. This, too, is entirely apart from the two new holiday editions just issued. And yet few books promised so poorly at the start. The book was first published nine years ago, and failed to attract even a moderate degree of attention. The first six months' royalty statement was hardly gratifying to the author. A year PASSED by, and the sale of the book was generally considered by' the publishers to have reached its limit. J.

S:)me of these letters have been mailed, addressed to Santa Clans, and without being stamped, and will be opened at the dead letter ollice, where the innocent requests will first come to light, too late for "old Santa" to grant the favor. The following letter is a fair sample of one of the letters to Santa Claus, and was written by a little girl, six years old:

Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, aud unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. The laws of health are taught in the schools: but not in it way to be of much practical benefit and are never illustrated by living examples, which in many cases might easily be done. If some scholar, who had just contracted a cold, was brought before the school, so that all could hear the dry, loud cough and know its significance see the thin white coating on the tongue and later, as the cold developed, see the profuse watery expectoration and thin watery discharge from the nose, not one of them would ever forget what the first symptoms of a cold were. The scholar should then be given Chamberlain's Cough Remedy freely, that all might see that even a severe cold could be cured in one or two days, or at least greatly mitigated, when properly treated as soon as the first symptoms appear. This remedy is famous for its cures of coughs colds and croup. It is made especially for these diseases and is the most prompt and most reliable medicine known for the purpose. 50 cent bottles for sale by Nye & Co.

A Xtitional Event.

The holding of the World's Fair in a ity scarcley 50 years old will be a remarkable event, but whether it will realy benefit this nation as much as the discovery of the Restorative Nervine by Dr. Franklin Miles is doubtful. This is just what the American people need to cure their excessive nervousness, dyspepsia, headache, dizziness, sleeplessness, neuralgia, nervous debility, dullness, confusion of mind, etc. It acts like a charm.
