SATURDAY, OCT. 31.1891.

The State printing has been awarded to W. B. Burford for $27,'29(.71. There were seven bidders.

Clatts Sphkcki.rs, the sugar king, has reduced the price of granulated sugar to 4 cents per pound to the great consternation of the trust.

Thk people of this country tiro now paying about one quarter of tho price for sugar that they paid in gootl old time6 in 1857.

Thk farmer can now, from the proceeds of his capital and labor, buy more for his house, his stable and his farm than ho ever could before. No freetrade scheme can ever put him in better condition, or half its good.

Thk Indianapolis Democrats are laughing in their sleeves at the smoothness with which they workeci the Sim Coy Take. The scheme was to drive respectable and unsuspecting Republicans to Sullivan. It worked admirably.

Ex-Skxatoii InuamjS. of Kansas, whose brilliant oratory has placed him in the front rank of rostrum entertainers, will' lecture at Indianapolis, tho •evening of November 2, under tho auspices of the l'ress Club of that city, 'oil "Tho Problems of tho Present Century." Excursion rates will bo given on all the railroads, for those who want to hear him.

Thk .Indianapolis Newa in delivering •ji preachment on party intolerance is a Hear case of the pot calling the kettle black. Because there is not a more intolerant sheet in Indiana than the Nctrs. It proceeds upon the theory that its policy is infallible, and it h- no more respect for the consciences and conviction of those who dilVer from it than the Arizona Kicker has for the villain across the wav

Tun McKinley protective tariff niits free of duty more goods than law ever passed by Congress, and reciprocity feature of it will bring us •more foreign trade than we have ever had. This trade is especially desirable, since it brings in free of duty good which do not compete in our markets -•with the industries of this country. ".Reciprocity strengthens protection with the people, and is a winning eard.\-«V V-v.

Thk view taken of "Our Business Prospects" by the President of the New York Chamber of Commerce, as expressed in his article on that subject in the i'November number of the North American Jieview, confirms the general opinion that the "industrial and conimercia establishments of the country are to-day upon a sound, conservative basis." Mr.

Smith's paper is full ot statistics relating to leading industries, which are of great interest as illustrating the general drift and condition of business. 'MiA

Thebh is a class of persons residing in Crawfordsville who depend upon their friends and neighbors for favors, imd are nothing lothe to receive them at any stage of the game. Nevertheless when it comes to making a purchase these sa.ae parties pass by tho stores of those who have favored them and boarding a train buy what they wish at Indianapolis. This too, when the same particle can be purchased for the same easprice in Crawfordsville. If Crawfordsssiville is not good enough for them they Is-jshoiild l6se no time in moving out.

Tiie Kev. Dr. l'arkhurst, the editor of Zion's Herald, Methodist, thinks that

dueed in two or throe of the eral Conferences some very scenes. No man should be voted for wiio allows himself to become the central figure in one of these scrambles for ofliue. The church cannot atlord to have I this disgraceful tendency perpetuated,

Anybody who needs to be "boomed" and finds a band of ramp followers necessary to promote Ins candidacy is not any tune if we

the man needed for bishop, or for high place in the church. Tho has fully come to turn a new 1 f, wish to retain the respect of the,, world around us."

Wmhn tho duty on steel rails was imposed, free trailers held up their hands in horror, and protested against the ruinous policy. They said that, as the tariff was a tax, our consumers must pay the whole of it, and steel rails would never come down in price and alleged further that wo could not make steel mils in this country anyhow except atruinous cost. Last year we made in this country over 2,000,000 tons of Bessemor steel rails, and they were sold at loss than ono-iourth of their price before the tariff was put on. And so it will bo with tin. Fn a year from now the free trade papers will not chirp about the manufacture of tin plate in this country.

Thk Pullman Car Company owns 2,23!) sleeping, parlor and dining cars, and they are running over 121,557 miles of railroads. Tho total investment is $45,(155,000. and in the building department then* are employed 5,455 hands, at an annual expense of §3,1534,527.41, Being an average of §010.73. In the operating department there are 13,885 employees, who received last near 87,303,108. The capital stock is now §30,000,000. and an annual dividend is paid of §2,000,003.

Thk Republican policy is for free trade in till articles in common demand which do not cotnpoto with home products, but seeks to protect our industries from t.ho products of European I f.ictories which do not pay workmen half the wages that are paid in this country. Tho proposition is a plain I one.

Dicing tho fiscal year which ended June !}(), 1891, there were finally adjudicated .and certificates issued in '250,5Go pension claims. This number was lOO.OOO in excess to tiny previous year in the history of the Pension Bureau. Gen. llaum expects during the present fiscal year to issue 3r'.yH)0 certificates.

Dkmoouacy stands for one set of principles in Ohio, and for another in Now York, its platforms are constructed to suit the locality and the occasion, ttnd not to conform to any determined ideas of right and justice. It, was ever so. and it ever will be.

Many of our citizens will take advantage of the low railroad rates on November 2d, to go Indianapolis to hear that brilliant and erudite speaker, Hon. John J. Ingalls, ex-Senator from Kansas, discuss "Tho Problems of the Present Centurv.''

The political reapportion-, ment which will follow it will carry tho balance of political power far away to the West, from New York and the other pivotal States.

Ex-Sijnator Inoat/ls's lecture in In dianapolis, November 2d, on "Political and Social Problems of our Nation's Second Century," is to be heard in but few cities of the country. His engagement began with only thirty lectures ahead of him, and the course is to be limited to that number. His appearance in Indianapolis will be the only chance for peoplo in this part of the country to hear him. The Press Club of that city litis tho matter in charge, and to enable persons from outside the city to enjoy the intellectual treat has secured excursion rates on the railroads.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of tho Republic.Capt. John Palmer, will shortly issue an order prohibiting Posts of tho G. A. There is room in this country but for one flag, and that the £,tars and stripes.

Why Georgia's Capital Was Removed. 1. N. VanSickle, a well known business man of Crawfordsville. lnd., who has spent, with his family, three or four winters in the South, was in the city yesterday and said to a reporter for the S't'irs: "Speaking of the removal of the capital of Georgia recalls to my mind a bit of unpublished history about that transaction. got it from the sheriff of Milledgeville, Ga.. and ho is a truthful, reliable num. The capital was removed from Milledgeville to Atlanta soon after the war for the reason that the residents of the former place refused to board the members of the Legislature. it being composed of persons then known as '"carpet baggers.'" and negroes. Cn account of this inability to get board, some members of the legislature offered a resolution tha1 the capital be removed to Atlanta, which was adopted with scarcely a dissenting voice. "Milledgeville," continued Mr. VanSickle." is now about such a place as Covington,. Ind..though it hasn't as much push and vigor iis that quiet hamlet on the banks of the Wabash. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of tho mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have it rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, aud unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will bo destroyed forever nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inilamed condition of tho mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that we cannot euro by taking Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free.
