No Special Licenses. 'i

The city schools will havo special teachers in writing and drawing this coming year and they will have to hustle for their license just like the teachers who teach "the three r's" at the cross roads school house. Supt. Zuck has refused to issue special licenses as has been the custom. He says the law makes no such provision and by the law he is bound.

recounted how

the wonderful growth of poetry and pugilism in the Hoosier Athens was being transcended in these latter days by the classic game of "craps," and slightly hinted that there would be a go-as-you-please "era])" tournament in Hutton's wood Sunday afternoon.

Brightly shone the Sabbath sun and merrily twittered tho forest birds and to be far from the maddening crowd and haunts of men seemed the desire of several of our eminent citizens. The hour of noon had scarce rolled by when out of their lairs stepped Bill Eaub, Bud Derickson, George Brown, Lew Minor and forty other hard heeled candidates for the Church Triumphant and to the the propitious day exclaiming, "Hail holy light, offspring of heaven first born," tlioy started oft' with hearts full of religious gratitude and jiraise foiTIutton's wood. As they nearod the sacrificial altars and heard the the merry jingle of the "bones" and the melodious croonings of"come seben-leb n," they uttered whoops of religious enthusiasm and started for tho rendezvous at a gait which would have done credit to the out of town girl at a high school hop. Those collected there were not all from

Africa's sunny sands" by a long shot. There were lots of "poor white trash," several clerks and a fair sprinkling of commercial travelers on the ground participating in the worship of King Craps. Everything was going on as merrily as one of Amelia Rives' novels when suddenly there was a cry of "The Philistines are upon us," and tho startled "crap shooters" looking up beheld afar off the glittering regalia of officers Ensminger and Grimes who were coming down like wolves on the fold, their cohorts all gleaming in silver and gold. They swooped down and smote tho shooters sore, scattering their hosts from Dan to Beersheba which is over against the Black Hills. One George, a mighty man of valor, bone bearer to Bill Iiaub and a captain of the host fled oven unto tho going down of the sun when he came into the land of Alamo and the region round about, when he lifted up his voico and wept insomuch that a husbandman brought him unto his father in a hay wagon. Tho police did not succeed in effecting a capture but broke up an exciting game and kept considerable money from changing hands. A great old game of draw poker was going on in the north-east corner of the wood and this was also disturbed.

AN ENORMOUS CROP.

A Million and a Half Bushels of Wheat Being Harvested in This County. The immense wheat crop of Montgomery county is fast falling beneath the mower, and in a few days will all stand in the shock. Total 50,10T It is estimated that tho yield will at least average 25 bushels to the acre. This being the case the total amount of wheat harvested in Montgomery county this year will be 1,50-1,925 bushels. We certainly have no causes to complain this year.

Ball vs. Bruce.

Ball iV Bruce used to be the name of a flourishing piano firm at Lafayette until a few months ago when they fell out. It is now Ball versus Bruce and they fight each other with teeth and toe nail. One of their controversies took place this morning at the home of C. O. Carlson, who is contemplating the purchase of an instrument. Their denunciations of each other's pianos and methods of business were heard all over the neighborhood and the way prices were cut waB a caution. Both claim to have sold to Mr. Carlson, but that gentleman says he has not yet purchased.

VIOLATING THE GAME LAW.

CONFESSED'TQ A CRIME.

James Gibbs While Intoxicated Confesses to Have Committed a Robbery. James Gibbs is a shoe maker residing in tho city who is addicted to the habit of intoxication. June 25 he started off on a toot and sold his shoes and coat for liquor at Charley Annabel's saloon near the Monon station. As he became drunk ho grew quite talkative and finally stated that ho was the man who robbed agent Watson last winter by striking him through the window with a club one night as he was counting money and making off with the boodle before Mr. Watson recovered. He was very boastful of tho exploit and was finally turned over to Officer Grimes bv Annable, who stated all the circumstances. Gibbs was at once lodged in jail and Mr. Watson was informed of tho capture. This morning in company with the freight conductor who witnessed the robbery last winter, Mr. Watson called at the jail for tho purpose of identifying the man. Neither of them were able to do so and they conversed some with Gibbs who was then perfectly sober. He protested his innocence stoutly and stated that he had told Annabel the story merely for a joke. The matter was left in the hands of the police who will act as they see fit. It is claimed that Gibbs was not in Crawfordsville at the time of the daring robbery. If this be true of course nothing will be done but an investigation will be made. Gibbs has a very nice family and is a hard worker when not fooling with liquor.

Not Nearly Enough Holding License to Take Charge of the Schools. During the past year four nudes and one female applicants for teachers license havo obtained o( months license, nine male and ten female applicants have obtained months' license, fortyeight male and fifty female applicants have obtained 12 months' license, and ten male and eleven female applicants have obtained (i months' license, a total of 71 males and 72 females. There have been 33 renewals, and now 198 persons in the county hold licenses. Thirtyseven of these do not intend to teach and there are considerably over 20 chools in the county. Moreover, aO goodly per cent, of those obtaining license every year are unable to obtain schools for obvious reasons. This leaves a large hole in the ranks of real teachers and there are more than enough schools to go around. There will be two or three more examinations before school reopens, but a majority of the capable teachers already hold license and it is feared that a number of scrubs will have to be run in on some of the weaker schools to fill out the number needed to take charge. There have been 20-i applicants rejected this year of whom 78 wore males and 12(5 females.

A New Fuel.

A reliable firm in Crawfordsville is about to embark in a new business, which, if successful, will completely revolutionize the fuel question. The new fuel, or more nearly, heating process, is produced by an apparatus known as a solarifitor. This apparatus consists of a largo reflector, highly polished and coated with a chemical preparation which possesses tho quality of attracting tho sun's rays. This reflector is connected by pipes to tanks with which the sun's rays are concentrated. From these tanks the condensed ozone is drawn into cans and hermetically sealed. By this method a family will be enabled'to lay in a supply of concentrated heat for winter use, and it is claimed, at a greatly reduced cost. Should this new process become a fixed and reliable heater, natural gas and other artificial means of heating will become a drug on the market. Let the citizens of Crawfordsville give this firm all tho encouragement possible as it is to the advantage of all.

He claims that before ho entered the Montgomery county jail that he was a paragon of 2hysical and moral cleanliness. Now ho is a wreck in both. He says that ho entered the jail perfectly clean, but that he came out fairly eaten up with lice and covered with vermin. He had to roost with a tramp who was anything but cleanly, and his constitution was well nigh wrecked by his three days' experience of jail life. Again he had a good reputation before he was incarcerated, but now that is gone and ho is pointed out by his neighbors as "the man who served a term in jail." He has suffered great mental anguish too he thinks, and will ask big damages.

Mr. Anton may have been humiliated as he richly deserved to be for getting on an indecent drunk, but when he claims tho jail of Montgomery county is infested with vermin ho is sadly off It is known to be kept in a perfectly clean and healthful condition and all the authorities making tours of investigation there so pronounce it. If Anton came out covered with lice he undoubtedly entered 111 the same condition.
