THE COUNCIL GHAMiiEE.
The Local Law-Givers Hold a Short But Interesting Session Monday Night, A full attendance of mouthers iiud officers m»rl ed I bo Council lust Jlouday oveniug aud us sevtiml desired to attend tho concert lLie reading of the jourual was disneused with and business rushed through in twenty miuutee. The Treasurer reported a balance of §2,905.18 which was immediukily reduced §59 by riio granting of tho protested bill of
C. N.
Williams for the
redisricting of tho city. The Council ordered a brick pavement placed in front of Warren Davis' property on Walnut street between Wabash avenue and Pike.
Inregard to the daui above the city reservoir the committee on Water Works recommended that it be removed as it endangers public health. They could see how the extensive surface drain and wash deposited therein made this obviously true. "Whether or not the dammed water is 6ver pumped into the standpipo or reBbrvoir is a question." The committee stated that this aggregation of filth so near and above the works should not be allowed and endorsed the report of the board of health recommending its removal. The Secretary's recommendation in egard to covering the resevoir and protecting it from the tides by wire netting was also endorsed. The matter was then refered back to the water works committee and the city attorney with power to investigate and remove the dam if it could be done without litigation. A resolution to improve Mill street from Wabash avenue to College street was referred to tho Board of Public Improvement to be reported on at the next meeting. TLo Water Company was instructed to put in the electric gong at the
£umP
house according to
agreement. James McAnee was elected to the position of minute man in the tiro department to till the vacancy oaused by the promotion of Prank McNeeley.
ATTEMPTED BRIBERY-
One Of The Oouncilmen Said to Have Been Tampered With On Ihe ijight Question* llumors wore rife on the street today of tho attempted bribery of one of the councilmen on the light question. All the Council are very reticent in regard to the matter and but little can be learned in regard to it. None of the knowing parties would state who tho party was who made the attempt or what side he was workiug for. "There is more truth than poetry in the affair," stud councilman Reynolds "but beyond that statement 1 have nolhiug to say except that if tho matter is carried any further it shall be made public." The gentleman said to have been approached was Councilman Scott although he says to-day ho has nothing whatever to say on tho subject. Last evening he stated to two ot the Councilmen that ha had been button holed by a certain gen-1 tleman Monday afternoon and told that there was no reason in the world why he could not make something out of the light deal. Ho was in-1 tormod that it would be about §1,000 to
see things go in the proper way. Mr. Scott,of course, left the would-be briber at ouco and told several of his friends of the circumstance but to-duy the matter is very close.
A Bad Runaway*
Last Monuay disastrous runaway occurred ou the corner of College and Plum streets in which James F. Graham sustained painful ana serious injuries. His team started to run at the corner und plunging into Mrs. Mary Burbridge's fence threw Mr. Giuham out and under the wheels. The horses tore on through the fenos demolishing it aud passing through the yard were finally stopped at Airs. Pruitt's front porch. The rig was sadly demolished and Air. (iraham severely hurt. His nose was terribly lacerated and torn as was one of Lis aims and he sustained numerous bruises and cuts.

MORE ABOUT OUR CHASE-
More Particulars Concerning the EiStwhile Professor of Chemistry at Wabash and His Recent Escapade.
Tho following dispatch to tho GlobeDemocrat of St. Louis details more in regard to tho Clark-Palmer scandal at Rolla, Mo: "Asocial cyclone stuuck the city to-duy when it was lonrued that Col. John O'Dny yesterday filed a suit for divorce on behalf of George Clark, charging his beautiful and accomplished little wifo with marital infidelity with Chase Palmer, the dashing young profossor of ohemistrv in the Missouri School of Mines. Your correspondent called upon Mr. Clark this morning, who received him courteously, and for an hour listened to his tale of woe. Mr. Clark said four years ago he was murried to Miss Grace Nelson, then 16 years of age and one of the most handsome and charming little girls in the city of Springfield. They immediately embarked on their wedding tour and spent several months sight-seeing in the Old World. Upoft their return to the States they took up their residence in the city ©f Springfield, and for a time lived happily together, but presently his wife wearied of him aud sought the society of other gentlemen. The young husband protested against her course, and a separation followed, but mutual friends brought them together again. Six months ago, through the influence of his mother, young Clark came to Holla and entered upon a three years' course of study in the School of Mines. Mr. Palmer, the handsome professor of chemistry, took Clark under his wing, and they became fast friends, even chums, wliioh often brought together the handsome cherry-chetked young wife and the gap professor.
Formal oalls, close friendship and intimate relations followed in rapid succession until it was' discovered by the husband that his cherished friend had become the desi-oiler of his happiness, and that instead of spending his time in the laboratory over tli^ chemist's furance he repaired to tho cozy parlors of the Grant House and spent it more agreeably with Mrs. Clark, This started the young husband on a spree, and returning to his hotel late one evening he attacked his wife with a knife. The soreams of the affrighted woman brought assistance before Clark had succeeded in his purpose. Mrs. Clark was taken charge of by friends, and the next morning placetl in a carriage and driven to tho town of St. James, ten miles east of here, where she boarded a west bound train for Springfield, whore she now resides.

London. March 7.—The result of the Canadian election is received with general satisfaction. 11 is looked upon tis a triumph of Jintish feeling and a pledge of attachment to the mother country. The St. .lames' (iazette is exultant, aud winds up a leading editorial by declaring: "Canada is British still. Wellington does not j-et rule over Ottawa."
Commissions Withheld.
luniANAroi.w. Ind.. March 7.—Tho governor has refused to issue commissions to Dr. Z. H. Dunnis is the onlv state officer elected by the legislature the governor will commission. lie adheres to his position of two years ago that the constitution does not give the legislature power to appoint these oilicers,,aml will take the question to the supreme court again. The governor says that in case the [supreme court should hold this time that he has tho power to appoint trustees and directors of the benevolent and penal institutions he will create absolutely non-partisan boards. The supreme court before which the constitutional questions will come this time is solidly republican.
