LETTER FRuM MONTANA.

The Olimate—Sheep and Oattle Raising— Prices of Commodities—Salanes of Oouuto Officers-

NORT GJIEATFALLS, Mont. Jan. 23, '91.—Friends old Montgomery have written me fifty-five letters in a mouth, inquiring about this far-famed "Nugget" State. Many of the questions required at loast one year's residence to answer knowingly and I now beg privilege of replying through your valuable column®.

The climate is healthful, curing asthma in its worst stage ind consumption in its earliest. "Old-tuners" tell us that croup is unknown among Montana children and no case hus come under our observation during the twentv-twr- months' residence. However fortunate is he who escapes au attack of "Mountain fever" while becoming acclimated. And rhemntism follows exposure. The sheep herders are all more c.r less afflicted with rheumatism and deafness. Their watching over their very noisv Hock through Spring showers to Winter blizzards brine-it about. The thermometer in the shade registers to-day (Jan. 23) 58 above zero instead of below, as many imagine. With one brief exception Summer has captured and hoUs prisoner December and January. l?ut, as a rule, cold weather begius soon niter Christmas and the bitterest kiud of biting cold prevui's till tlu* middle of February. (Then the last half o) this month is the time to prepare the soil anil sow the seed anil repair the irrigation ditches and clear the barns for a rich harvest). In that short Winter season the air is light and you wou'd not know 'twas -Ki to (10 degrees below zero but for tbe air's cutting the mucous membrane of the nasal passiiges. Two colored gentlemen of the tJ. S. Army froze to death last Winter while trying to walk from Sun River to Fort Shaw, a distance of -1 miles. One must keep indoors during the Winter peri6d or become acquaiut.d With catarrh in its severest form, notwithstanding the fact you have read "annuals" stating the opposite. The iucessaut gentle zephyrs fan away all sultriness (ind sometimes houses when there is not a cloud in sight). Wind? Well, yes, that word is too mild aud inexpressive when you are chasing your hat across the prairie aud best efforts of your spirited horsa are iu vaiu. Umbrella, and parasols are not in fashion.

The agricultural districts are quite limited yet. Close to the mountains where raiu is plentiful, or under irrigation, the yield is heavy. Sun River illey has a grand svstem of irrigation and ou M. L. and H. Ji. Strong's well tilled farms, wheat has reached eighty bushels per acre aud oats one hundred and twenty-five bushels per acre. The second crop of oats is mowed as hay for brief Winter. Irrigation and in-

tie dustry guarantee success. Mrs. Murray tilled (or caused to be) a three-acre arden and marketi her vegetables at the towu of Sun lliver live vears, and with tho live thousaud dollars c.isli receipts bought au improved farm last year. Real estate agents greet a ''tenderfoot" on his arrival, telling him what good crops cau bo raised oa the bench" any season. Aud they have &pecimens of wheat aud oats iu tlieir offices to show the quality. These "bench" snecimens are ne-irly three years old aud will be kei till next "wet year" to renew the supply.

As to stock, immense herds of horses, cattle aud sueep checker the millionacre ranges. Thev trod the deep-cut buffalo paths to the richest pastures aud strongest fountnius, iiud are fat aud gay like the premium stock exhibited at your couuty fair. Auy man of business habits can double his investment in she here iu two years. Some warm battles take place between the cow boys and sheep herders as per orders of former's employers, when their herds aud iiocks meet, because the sheep graze so closely as to ii. stroy the pas tu re for oattio. l)ui you ever draw re lis in a Aiontana sheep camp and note the difference iu herder.-( See that experienced, deaf, greasy, prideless herder standing calmly in the midst of ringing bet s, Jost, lambs, and bleating ewes, directing the movements of his trained dogs! Setthat dog billy a mile to the front turning back the uususpeot.iug sheep to the disappointment of the hungry wolf! Aud there's a third dog running to the General for further orders! Thus the successful herder manages three to seven thousand sheep without worry. On the other hand, the new bewildered, inexperienced, sensitive herder is running at, bmik-ueok speed trying to head off his small band, with club in hand a_d pup at heel! Tho latter loses more sheep in a week than the forme.r iu a year aud commands half the wages. Swine will not thrive up here (it cost us no small sum to learn this.) The An nuals circulated east say "cholera is unknown" which is true, but a disease something like homesickness, takes hold aud your hogs piu», away and uie. Hence pork is imported while ui itt ou aud beef are exported. May we add hero that Hour is another chief import, yet the reader should bear iu miud that M. ntaua is out of debt and now ranks lirsi of tho Union iu mineral wealth.

Well, chickens are good property, never less than $0 per dozen. Twelve dollars a dozen is a common price. Eggs sell at 80 to 10 cents per dozen in summer and are 50 cents a dozen at the present writing. Turkeys seem to know their value, (25 cents per pound the year round) and all die with tho "big-head," some call it "rupe."

The eastern pupils would drop bat and ball to watch tho western schoolboy's favorite game, "The Round-up." The boys urge their claims to be "Roper" and "Hrauder" like you to be "catcher" aud "giver" iu "town-ball." The roper throws his lasso so as to catch the best dodger aud the brauder applies the branding iron till his calf "bellers."

C. C. Ivellisou is teaching the town school und is well-liked by pupil and patron, throwing hio whole vim and pride into tho work as of old at

Round Hill. C. O. thinks the pluok of his pupils commendable. Two seven year old little girls drive five miles to school every morning, bringing their own and pony's meals in the buggy. At the close of school, tho town boys try to "hang on," but with a mischievous smile one little girl, holds the liues while the other is plyiDg the whip and they gallop out of sight. School having begun early will close in a fortnight and the teacher will be in Crawfordsville in three weeks.

Tnere are many Hoosiers in this couaty. The President of the First National ink of Great Falls, the editors of the Tribune, some of the chief merchants, ranchers, teachers, survey ors, lawyers and ablest preacher are all from Indiana.

Money is plentiful yet commnuds n. high rate of interest. Two per cent month or 24 per cent, interest if often paid while 10 per cent, is a low rate Bank deposits (for a oeriod of at least monthi--) draw Gperc-jut. interest. Even grocers doa strictly cash business on largo scale. Bach,Cory & Cc.'s receipls for the mouth of August alouo was thirtysix thousand dollar*.

Lots that sold for £150 six years ago can not be bought for $18,000 now Sucli opportunities for investment are gone, but those lots iu the northeast part of the city selling at from §500 to $700 will advance 100 per cent, in one year, mark it! Between the public school building and the great dam is th place to invest.

This couuty is Republican by a small majority, but Hon. Paris Gibsou is crv dit- with spending §20,000 to make the county 30 Democratic aud secured his own election as State Senator for this couuty, ir.st November. At the opening of the campaigu oue year ago, it was found that there was not a lawyer to take the race ou tho Republican ticket for Prosecuting A'tornev, so a party set out to the mountains 75 miles away "to rustle" one from out of a surveying pirty. Hon. Douglas Martin was brought down and nominated and run like a scared fox. He uow holds the office and is chairman of the central committee. All couuty offices here pay twice the salary of Montgomery, as 1 remember, e. g., the Judge of Circuit Court receives §9,000 per term. But before the Atlieu bovs pick up their "rips" to come here for office, let me state that you are too lute for '92 as two years residence is required to bo eligible for office.

Si-ice Hons. Peter Kennedy and A. D. Kelliso'". have pictured so vividly the scenery of this locality, I'll not attempt. But would like to intrude, later, with some facts on foreign emmigration. Being au enumerator of the receut census (at §180 per month clear) 1 took time to do thorough work, aud find that the choice "claims" given tiie old soldiers as free homes are nearly all taken by aliens whose ancestors iu good part tried to crush our republic Very Respectfully A. T. KELLISON.
