THE BUTTER FACTOUY.

The Crawfordsville Butter Factory has commenced running. It is the first attempt to start the dairy busiues here nn:l its success must depend upon the liberal support ot' the farmers in the vicinity of our city. There is no reason why it should not prove a grand sucooss. It is in the hands of men who are well known in Montgomery county, ancl it will not fail if they can secure a supply of milk to keep it running. The factory lias been started at considerable expense to its projector?, who have had the courage to risk their money in it, believing that with our good grass lands and excellent roads in every direction, and the facilities for shipping butter to every point it would prove a permanent industry in our midst. If our farmers do not take hold and do what they can to make the enterprise successful they will most assuredly stand in their own light.

Wherever dairying has been tried under favorable conditions, it has paid, not only the owners, but the farmers as well. The Elgin, Illinois, district has been generally built up by its dairy business. Since the building of numerous butter factories in that locality, land has gone up from .$30 per acre to SlOl) per acre, and so much has the quality of cows been improved that they sell readily at from $50 to §75 a head. It has been fouud that the dairy business is much more profitable than raising grain and stock.

A gentleman it this city who feels a deep interest in the succcss of this new enterprise, recently received a letter from a business firm in Elgin, 111., in reference to the dairy business there, from which it is learned that butter was manufactured there in the year 18'JO to the amount of over twenty-one million pounds, which was sold for nearly five million dollar.*--, more than all the corn, wheat, hogs, cattle and other farm products of Montgomery county would bring in two yours. A few years ago Kane county, of which Elgin is the county HJ a t, wus raising only wheat a«jd corn, and lund was rtlrncsi worthless but since the establishment of the great dairy business there, hind has gone up to .$100 per acre and so much has the quality of milk cows been improved that a dairy cow readily brings $75. Other kinds of farming, except the raising of such products as can bo consumed at home, has been greatly restricted, because it hub been iouud that dairy farming 1 troves far more profitable than other kinds of farming. Aro not these facts Bullicient to induce our people to put their t.houlder to the wheel and help the industrious and enterprising young men who have risked their capital in a venture here, to make a success of it. There is no denying the fact that our people have not been as hospitable to xi-jw enterprises here as they should have been otherwise our couuty to-day might be one of the most prosperous and wealthy communities in the couutry. The history of Ivane couuty, Illinois. is the history of many other counties east und west. Butter factories have never tailed except for the lack of good management in their owners, or a lack of interest on the part of the farmers in tlieir vicini'y. Let it not be said of our farmers that they had not the intelligence to appreciate the advantage of so givut a good as butter iactory in their midst capable of turning out 500 pounds of butter per day.

OUR SCHOOL FUND.

THE JOURNAL to-day presents to its readers a small portion of the record of John L. Goben as Auditor of Montgom ery county, and the manner in which he haa mamf ulated the School Fund, that he and his might receive the benefit of the people's money. There is no political excitement on now to blind the eyes of the people to the manipulations of this political trickster, and the article we print to-day setting forth only a few of the plain facts in the case is written without any feeling, save that of public interest. The public has seen the cloven-foot and horns before, but always in the heat of political battle. Xow they can be looked at calmly and dispassionately, and a true verdict rendered. The article in question only

touches tliJ border land of his School Fund manipulations. It will be followed by others giving the plain faots in detail as backed up by the records, and will show how titles have been jug gled with that Goben's friends, henchmen and workers might be fitted out as thev desired, how interest has beon allowed to run unpaid in violation of law, until eucli a time as political aspirutions should be gratified, when the Auditor, it is presumed, will foreclose. A oouple of mortgages againBt himself are ready for foreclosure for non payment of interest. There are many interesting things yet to come, and at which the public will be astonished.

THE WORLD'S FAIR BOYCOTT. The polititians of the South never do anything that it not dictated by mere passio'i instead of good sense. If they have not sense enough to know that their threats to boycott the World'sFair if the election bill is passed is apiece of silliness that would be a digraoe to a bevy of six year old boys in a wrangle over a game of marbles. They are for all the world liko thoboy who threatened one of his comrades with the direlul punishment of refusiug to show his sore toe if his wishes were not regarded. If the Southern politicians expect to force a defeat of the election bill by any such means, they will find themselves as badly mistaken as they were when thoy opened the batteries on Fort Sumter.m 1801 and will learn to their sorrow that they linvo taken tho very conrso above all others to uuito tho Republican party to a man in favor of the "force bill.' They will learn in due time that the "force" of throats is tho merest of weakness, and that men who could not be subdued with bayonets and cannon can not be conquered by a threat of the kind in question.

What matters it whether the South takes any part in the World's Fair or not. It will huve little to show except murdered "niggers" and treason, and the bellowing of prairie bulls liko Mills of Texas.

But, notwithstanding, the Indiana Democrats have joined in this foolishness, and with few exceptions, have indicated their purpose to participate in this boycott. Let them go abe d. It will prove as disreputable as their ellbrts to join Indiana to tho Southern Confederacy in 18l!3.

HEPPEHENTATIVE MCCLOSKEY has introduced a lengthy bill regulating tho establishment and government of building and loan associations. It amends the present law so as to provide that iitty instead of tou people shall be empowered to organize such associations, with two hundred instead of one hundred shares of stock. It further provides that no company organized under tho laws of another State shall be allowed to do business in this State without first depositing $100,000 in cash or securities with the Treasurer of State that no interest shall bo charged stockholders beyond the legal contract rate, aud that tho premiums shall not exceed 5 cents on each §100 that the weekly payment shall not exceed 50 cents a week and that the membership fee shall be '25 cents on each §100, with un allowance of 5 per cent for defraying the expenses of the association. The issue of paid-up stock is prohibited, and it is expressly provided that the secretary of each association shall publish and distribute among stockholders a sworn statement annually of the financial operations of tho concern.

W HEN this light question is off hand, Mayor Carr, Councilman Soott, Reynolds and ones, who seem to be running things, should look into the matter of an improved system of sewerage an! also investigate the cost and advantages of paving our principal streets with brick. Say one block a year should be paved, the expanse would not le enormous and inafow years the business part of town would bo in fiue shape. Perhaps the Clay Combination Company would furnish the brick at an inside figure.

WITH three councilmen, Elmore, Evans and Walter, ugainst the city purchasing an electric light plant of its own ond tho other three, Scott, Reynolds and Jones unalterably in favor of it as they say they are, and Mayor Carr ready to cast the deciding yote in favor it looks very much as if Crawfordsville wouid do its own lighting after August 1. The only way to escape this result is for the opposition to follow the brilliant examples of the Democrats in the U. S. Senate and talk it to death.

A bill has been introduced in the House providing that any man who shall be proven guilty of whipping his wife, shall himself receive sixty lashes and that the public shall be admitted to the jail yard to see him whipped. By all means let tho bill puss.

Now that the lire alarm system is thoroughly in the council should pass an ordinance against sending in a false alarm.*-':''

THE next city electiou occurs in May, when successors to Councilmen Scott, Evans and Elmore will be ohoseu. The

question of municipal ownership of a light pl*»nt will in all probability be the issue and the people will then have an ojiportunity to record their will. Assuming that all of these gentlemen will be candidates for re-election the defeat of Scott would defeat the proposition to buy ard mean the acceptance of the proposition printed in THE JOURNAL yesterday. The defeat of Evans aud Elmore would be a triumph for municipal ownership and make the property oi the Water and Light Company almost worthless.

NEW YORK PRKSS: Did anybodv in this country eat fewer eggs in November 1890 than in November, 1889? Yet in November, 1889, with eggs on the free list, we imported 2,408,452 dozeu

And the price wasn't raised, either, lor the eggs we imported in November, 1889, were invoiced at §413,502, or 16.75 cents a dozen.

while those we imported in November, 1899, were invoiced at §17,821, or only 94 cents a dozen.

It simply means that §385,741 went into the pockets of American farmers instead of Canadian farmers.

SENATOR MOUNT'S bill to apportion the school fund in proportion to the attendance in school will meet with opposition in tho largo cities. It is stated by the Nows that Indianapolis under the proposed bill will receive only about §30,000 annually instead of §100,000. If that is the cuso more is tho need that tho bill snould puss. It shows that the present method is unfair and discriminates against tho country schools. Under the present manner of distributing the school funds the large cities are enabled to maintain their schools nine mouths during the year whili the country districts are barely able to run five months.
