His bill provides that the ticket must be counted as straight whether the canceling stamp be placed at the head or bottom, ou the suli or the middle, or elsewhere or that part of the paper on which the ticket intended 13 be voted i3 print e3. Democrats of the Senate will prob :ibly vote for this amendment to the law as It was by this method that McHugh wns counted in notwithstanding the plain provisions of the law as it now stands to the contrary.

GOVERNOR HOVEY threw a bomb into the Democratic oamp yesterday in the shape of a special message concerning gruve abuses iu the management of th Northern Prison. Warden Murdock delinquency consists in refusing to turn the surplus money into the State treas ury iu compliance with the provision of the statute, end a!so that he has ap preprinted to hiu own use the protits on the slop contract amounting to sevoral thousand dollars. The Govereor asked for a special committee to make thorough examination. Both the Sen ate and Hox.se refused to appoint such committee, although a few Democrats voted with the Republicans for invest! gation.

A BILL has been offered in the House which provides for county assessors in stead of township assessors. The ap praisemeut of land and assessment of personal property for the whole county shall be done by deputies appointed by the oounty assessor. These deputies are to be appointed for their special qualifications. Railroad men will assess railroad property. Real estate men men will be appointed to appraise real estate in cities, and practical builders to assess buildings. Farm produots and country real estate will be valued by farmers. Dry goods men will assess dry goods stocks, etc. The salary of the county assessor is fixed at §5 per day, not to exceed sixty days in any one year. Deputies are to reoeive §2 per day.

A NATLRAL GAS PIPE LINE. A. F. Ramsey has been in correspondence with Maj. C. T. Doxey relative to a natural gas pipe line to Crawfordsville. Moj. Doxey has implicit faith in the permanency of the gas and considers the discussion of its weakening as nothing but idle talk. He has shown his faith by hi works by largely iuesting his means, of which ho is amply provided, in this kind of property. He is still willing and anxious to make further investments in the same direction. And with this end in view he has opened correspondence with Mr. Ramsey. He writes giving his experience as a practical man that a six-inch line from the Sheridan fields by way of

Thorntown and Darlington will be amply sufficient to furnish an abundance of gas to the consumers at all three of the points and that the use of eight inch pipes on a line like this would be useless expenditure of money. He estimates that a six-inch line including the mains and service for the three towns could be placed in at a cost of §275,000. Of this amount he stands eady and willing to subscribe for §75, 000 of the stock, the remaining capital to be furnished by the citizens. He regards it as a safe and paying investment, the bist evidence being that the stock iu none of the existing lines is jr sale except at premium. The fact that the Major is willing to invest so largely himself should be an incentive our home capitalists to put their money in the scheme. The Major expresses the belief that there should be no hesitancy on the part of our moneyed men to raise the required amount in §20,000, §10,000 aud §5,000 blocks. It is a subject worthy of thorough investigation and THE JOURNAL believes that the scheme is feasible. At least it should arrest the attention of men who are seeking investments for their surplus ctpitai.

TIIERE is a good deal of curiosity among the public to learn how the projectors of cheap aluminum at Chicago are progressing. That light but valuable metal is yet worth about §1 per pouud, but the Chicago men say they can furnish it for about 1( cents. They promise also to bring aluminum into the place of silver, brass, tin and nickel. Aluminum is the oasis of clay, is only one-third as heavy as iron, and does not tarnish with the using. The Windy Oity Men promise to have a lot of it on exhibition at the great exposition of '1)3.

TIIERE are 1,300 beet sugar factories now in Europe, consuming 24,000,000 tons of beets and furnishing 2,000,000 tons of sugar. Labor and luel in thu manufacture cost §80,000,000 and more than §100,000,000 are paid to the farmers for beets. Air. Rusk, of our Department of Agriculture, may well auticiprte great results from the estabishment of beet sugar making in this country.

Pettit is at work on a sanding m^o.'-.ii in the chair manufacturing department, und his hands were quite sore tho first few days. He bears it patiently, however, in the hopes that he will soon be relieved and put on Lafayette Couric-r.
