This is au oiHcial st'itemont of ft well understood truth. The investigation of olTieials iu tho pension bureau develops tho startling fact that pension attorneys liave ueeu paid by soldiers since tho beginning of the war for services, preteudud or real, the enormous sum ^f £37,(JUL),000,

During

he year 181)1) they levied upon tho pension allowances of disabled vettraus or dependent widows or children to the tune of $2,150,000. Nor is this all. Unless Congress makes some provision lor tho protection of soldiers there is yet in sight for ttiese so-emled attorneys the huge pile of 1,800,000.

Au analysis of this lust statement shows the following: Under existing laws ou original invalid claims now ou Lile under the old laws, about 200,000 at a fee of $25, £5,000,000 original claims under law ot June 27, 1800, 530,000 at a fee of $10 each, 5,300,000 fees ou increase claims now on lile, 300,000 at $10 each, 5^3,000,000 and the estimated number of increase claims that will be Idled under tho law ol Juue 27, 181)0, £8,500,000, a total sum ot $21,800,000 Does it not appear that Congress should do something to relievo the soldiers from this terrible drain upou their small resources?

Those opposed to the Republic Congressional policy are beginning to couut the days before this session will end. There are in fact lifty days re maining for work ere Congress expires by limitation. Everybody familiar with legislation knows lull well that the bulk of tho work is always done after the holiday recess, lleuce cliere is no particular alarm at the existing cou ditiou of things. As a matter of fact tho'.gli, business stands just as well now as it usually does at this period of the year. The appropriation measures aro well advanced in the committee which make them up. 'lhe nsion ai.d fort llcatiou bills have been com pleted in tho House the army aud navyare on the House calendar ready for action the Indian, sundry civil, agri cultural, aud iu fayt the four others re maining are well lorward toward com pletion iu tho various committees which prepare them. Notwithstanding ail this talk about tho backwardness of the appropriation bills it can bo put dowu us a certainty that all will be passed before the final dissolution of Congress. At every sLort session four lifths of these money bills become laws in the last fortyeight hours of a session. Thus far Judge Cannon says there has been no necessity for side-tracking other legislation to give the appropriation measures the right of way.

The politicians here have been gossiping the last few days about tho Ohio situation. The reputed movement of Governor Foraker to make Senator Sherman the next liepublican candidate for governor is the sensation of the hour. Senator Sherman himself saya that auy such undertaking is made without his authority or consent, aud that he does not want to be governor of the State. Iu fact, he says, there are younger men who are able to lill the oUair, and he thinks McKinley will be the nominee. It is well understood by tne Senator's friends that ho aspires to no ollice beyond tho one now tilled by him. So far as Major McKinley is concerned he declines to be interviewed, but it is pretty safe to say he will be in the race to the finish.

One of tho quaint figures of Washington is old General Albert Pike, of Arkansas. Tall and of heavy build, with long flowing white hair and snowy beard he attracts the attention of all. Gent ral Pike is one of the highest Masous in the country. To the fraternity he has given his valuable library which is housed in the same building with himself. In all matters of masonry he is looked up to as au authority, and no great occasion of the order would be held complete without las presence.

Tin's week tho t-H'ort will be made to pass the shipping bill. lleprorfeutativo I'arquhar, of New York, who has charge oi it, predicts that if it becomes a law, within a year, five or six seaports of io south will have built up an ocean trade wun European and South American ports. Ilo is conlideut that the bill will bo passed by the House with the postal aud naval clauses added. "While one part oi the army is fighting out West another part is dancing mthis city—not the ghost dauco but the german. The past week tho ollicers at the barracks hero gave a prmud ball, and at every daneo the army contingent can always be found. There area number ol Uuited States troops stationed here, iucludiug a regiment of artillery, nearly all ol' whom are armed as infantry soldiers, and besides who have two troops ot cavalry men who have soon hard sor vice on the plains and thereby won tho privilege of pleasant quarters near the Capital. Geueral Grant, when President was the lirsfc to mass an armed force in this city, the necessity of which was forced upon him by the threatened subversion of tho government by these who would have by force made Tildun liis successor.
